It doesn't seem to be a well known fact but from 9th September Merseyrail are withdrawing Off Peak Day Returns meaning whatever time you travel or whatever day you travel you'll need to buy an Anytime Day Return i.e. a peak return.

New fares can be found on https://www.nationalrail.co.uk if you specify a date of no earlier than 9th September for travel.

I've looked at both, and rather confused. National rail offer the fare for £18 after the 9th of September...

Could it be a mistake from National rail?

geordieracer That isn't actually Merseyrail's official information. They've paid for access to the database held by raileasy.co.uk opposed to having their own booking engine and raileasy obviously haven't updated their database yet. Although, if they sell you a ticket at the old fare then you are permitted to use it.

If you try other sites e.g. London Midland, East Coast, Virgin etc or ask at a station ticket office you'll be told the fare is £5.50 all day.

I don't know where you've got £18 from It states £5.50 when I try it. Has it given you a Day Ranger ticket instead of a return fare?

That's just typical of Merseyrail, remove Off peak day returns, then forget to tell the people who run its online fare database, Merseyrail professional as ever.

But more importantly what a nice little unofficial fare increase, on the route I use a lot, Chester to Liverpool LS, it goes up £4.40 to £6.20 that just under 30% increase overnite  and then come Jan they can have their official increase, nice

and to make things worse, Merseyrail's yellow class 508's have got to be the most unpleasant way to travel.

If you arrive at Chester on a Northern 142 and change to a Merseyrail 507/508 then it feels like a massive improvement even though they aren't very good for journeys like Chester-Liverpool or Liverpool South Parkway-Southport.
