A/c payee only on cheque what does it mean?

l've just started a new job and as my bank details haven't been put through yet I've been issued a cheque.
I really need the money but it says A/c payee only on the front, I've googled it but can't find much info but from what I've gathered it means I won't get the cash given to me directly?
Is this right? So how long will it take for the cheque to clear?
Also do I just take it to my bank, or any bank?

If a cheque if for Account Payee only it has to go directly into a bank in your own name and cannot be transferred to another person. You would not be able to cash this anywhere else either. A cheque usually takes around 5-7 working days to clear depending on which bank/building society you are with. Hope this helps0
