Don't know if you want single or return and what dates you are looking at but National Express have the Route Sixty offer on for the over 60's. May be worth a look.

You can travel by train for £21 (depending on time of travel) if you use :

You should buy a single from nottingham to birmingham for £10 and another one from Birmingham to Cardiff for £11. You'll probably have to change in Birmingham, but there could well be a through train - again it depends on the time

You might be able to get that price lower if are over 60 - I didn't go through to the payment page to see if there are any reductions available.
