2 million cans

I have been away from the forums for a while, working myself into the grave was not the way forward for me. But having still floated around the forums I saw on the up your income thread about collecting scrap metal and cans.
The price paid for loose aluminium cans currently lies at £600 per metric tonne, the weight of a redbull (or generic version) can is around 10g. Allowing for transport and packaging together the cans and based on the tesco green points for recycling standing at 1 per 2 cans I am going to round down the price to 50p a kg and assume that most cans (although clearly bigger cans weigh more) will come in at 10g so that I can over estimate rather than under estimate the number of cans needed to meet my goal of clearing my interest accruing debt. The figure I came up with was 2,000,000.
So there it is, all that stands between me and debt freedom is 2 million used aluminium cans, but it gets better, I've already saved 24 cans, so just another 1,999,976 to go!

I have some storage, and they crush down quite well but anticipate more than one trip to scrappers. Also have spoken with one of the venues I often work and they are happy for me to 'raid' their bins, mostly they'll just keep them in a separate box for me to collect. Going to see how many I can fit crushed down into a strong bin bag then will have a rough idea when to transport.Debt £5600 all 0%0

Good luck with your can quest!
I have to admit it annoys me that the few cans I do drink are 'wasted' and go to recycling instead of tesco points. I know selling them for a scrappy would be better but only if you have loads of them and I have no storage. But I have no car either anymore so even taking them to closest tesco's that has a can bin is bit of a pain.DEBT FREE OCTOBER 2012!Proud to have dealt with my debts!0 -
Does anyone know which Tesco's do this scheme. We use a lot of cans and didn't know you could get Tesco points for them. Is that better than the scrappy option. How many do you need for £600?0

That's a novel way to do it, well done you for coming up with the idea and good luck to you. My suggestion would be to ask the pubs and clubs locally if you may take thier cans, perhaps some would even be so kind as to get the staff to separate cans from other waste as they work. Most pubs use bottle bins (big blue tubs on wheels) and most bigger ones have more than one, so they could easily use one for cans and one for glass. I expect if you were prepared to empty them at times to suit the pub then the landlords would be only too pleased to see you!
Again cafe's are possible, I am just thinking of one near me in a park, he only sells cold drinks in cans and he's got trouble with his bins overflowing as it is. I bet he'd let you put a can bin there if you kept it neat... I wonder if there are others like him in your locale.I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

I wonder if you could use tin cans to negotiate early settlements on your debts?
Try calling one and asking if they would accept 140 empty cans of Stella as payemtn for £100 of debt...
Go on... you know you wanna... x0 -
Some tesco have a machine which pay 1 Clubcard point per 2 cans, we have started collecting is surprisigly easy to find them lieing about.0
