Beetroots gone to seed?
Hi, I have quite a few beetroots in, they seem to have gone to seed - a big flower type thing growing out of the top! will they still be ok to eat? Also, I boiled some of the normal looking ones and in parts they were quite stringy, is this because I didn't boil them for long enough?
Thanks in advance for any help

The ones gone to seed are not normally very tasty, they are edible but may be "woody", best in the compost heap
How long did you cook the stringy ones for? You may be right on cooking time, it is a ong time since I cooked beetroot so cannot advise on time needed, no doubt some one else canNumerus non sum0 -

I cook mine when they are about golf ball size - bring to the boil, simmer for around 20 - 30 mins and then leave to cool in the water. I don't like them but DH swears they are lovely!ELITE 5:2

If you don't boil them for long enough, they are just too hard, never had them stringy before.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

Next year buy a variety called "Boltardy", they dont go to seed. And instead of boiling them, put 4 or 5 in a large pyrex bowl with 2 tablespoons of cold water and into the microwave for 12mins on full power. The skins come off easily too.0
