HTC desire on Vodafone- not finding Wi-Fi since 2.2 update

Options
Hi,
Might be the wrong forum, but I'm hoping someone can help!

I've got a Voda contract HTC desire, had it for 3 months, and it's been fantastic.
Last night I downloaded the new Andriod - 2.2 - which all went well, but I have a problem with connecting to Wi-Fi now.
I'll give the details in the hope someone knows what to do, and I'll ask a more obvious MSE question too..
- Everything in house is connecting ok to Router.
- Desire worked fine with router before update.
- Rebooted router.
- Phone is showing my routers name, but then flicking to "Obtaining IP address", then back to searching - this loop happens infinately, wrecking the battery power (I used all the battery on standby last night!)
- Happens when I connect to other routers too.
- 3 G connection is fine.

So Voda cannot help, they put me through to HTC, who advised me to try a soft reset - didn't work.
They then said I'd need to do a hard reset. I don't really want to have to do this, as the settings and data on the phone are 2 months work - MEH!
So can anyone help technically? I've searched the internet, and the remedies look alarmingly like rooting the phone. They also suggest a 'goldcard' - frankly I don't want to or think I should be getting that far into the IoS...
General MSE question - do you think this should be more Voda's responsibility? I understand that they won't have the tech details for each and every phone, but they seem content that once they've done their bit, I'm on my own.

Managed to get this working using the Google Android forums.
Used a Static address - there's some conflict with 2.2 and Belkin N1's.
Tech stuff really drives me crazy.
What are the implications of this? Will I still be able to use other routers?
For info, this is what I did -
    IP: 192.168.2.4
    Gateway: 192.168.2.1
    Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
    DNS 1: 192.168.2.1
    DNS 2: BLANK

Thanks for coming back and letting everyone know what the solution was Paul. That will help if other Desire/N1 owners have the same issue.

Still not sure what the implications of using a static IP address are though.

This is stated as a temp work-around...hmmmm

Using a static IP address is OK while your're on your router. The downside as opposed to it searching itself is that if you want to connect to a router on a different subnet i.e. 192.168.1.0 then you'll have to change the details manually rather than the phone doing it for you.

I did hear that Voda were the first to release 2.2 - be grateful you didnt get the first build. Apparently they bundled in their own 360 software which took over the phone. Their forums were flooded with complaints so they had to release another version to fix it!

    :)

Thanks for this. I take it if mine match the exact ones that are posted around the forums, most routers would use this Subnet?

About the second point - Voda 360 was nothing to do with FroYo, so it's worse than you sumise! They sent out a lot of branded c*ap, people thought it was 2.2, and downloaded it! It moved favourites, was memory hungry, and no 2.2! Brilliant\!

If you happen upon a router that is on the same subnet then there is a reasonable chance it will work.

A couple of hitches you may encounter is if someone already has the same IP address as your phone, one will work, the other won't! Also not all gateway/DNS address' will be the same so you may find yourself having to change that as well.

Not all routers use the same subnet, mine runs on the 192.168.1.0 subnet so you'd have to change your IP, gateway and DNS address's which is a bit of a palava!

Thanks...Bah this is going to suck!

Hopefully they won't be a Belkin one and I'll be able to switch it back to auto.
Do they still do the Nokia 3610? I was just as happy, playing snake and making phone calls, and only having to charge every week :D

I know what you mean! I've got the HTC Wildfire (Desire's smaller not quite as powerful brother) and it goes through battery like nobodies business!!!

There's a couple of Snake apps on the Android market but they're not rated highly so I wouldnt bother!

It's a bit like the old days, when I had disposable income (sigh...)
Crave a new car for ages, save up, eventually buy it.
3 months later sit in it thinking "you know what, I could've had one for £6 grand less and been able to do the same stuff as I'm doing now"

Got annoying probs with this, wonder if anyone can help -

I had initial probs with my Desire when I upgraded to 2.2.
It was the constant "Connecting...scanning" loop that eats your batteries.

My wife has the same phone, but on O2, and gets the same issue.
The router is a Belkin N1.
    Phones work elsewhere, perfectly.

I eventually found it worked when I used a static IP address, so used that for now.
However, after a number of issues with my work laptop at home disconnecting from the VPN, I had a look and found a "IP CONFLICT" issue on the lappy.
So when i make my phone forget the Wifi network, all is fine.
When my wife comes back home, if I'm working, her phone will auto disconnect me, if she's not turned it off!

Any suggestions? I didn't feel the static was a long term measure anyway, but now it's causing plenty of issues!
