Internet security 2010

Hi I need to update my internet security in the next month and would like some suggestions please. I am currently using Bit Defender but am not AT ALL happy with it, it doesn't do the updates or scans even though there are schedules set for both. I used to have fsecure which I was very happy with but it seems to have gone rather expensive for this year. I would like to pay less than £30 if possible and it's for a laptop and a PC and have one that just sits in the background and does the job without any fuss. Oh and I don't want Norton, Mcafee or any of the ones that are offered free when you purchase computers cos I have not heard one good thing about any of them. Bit of a fussy request I know but know that someone on here wil help.:)

I suspect the reason why your latest av doesnt work properly is because you still have some parts of the older av/av's stll on your computer (Which also means youll continue to have problems with most avs until the problems sorted)
Not entirely sure what you meant about the free ones, but AVAST and AVIRA are head and shoulders above most avs:idea:0 -
Sorry bit confusing there. I meant when you buy a computer they give you a free trial of certain internet securities like Norton etc and I dont want any of these.
I did remove all the software from the old internet security before putting the new one on and have rung the help line for the new one who told me to take it off and put it back on through the repair feature,it worked ok for a few days and then was as bad as ever and I hagve now done this 4 times. The same problem happens on both my PC and my laptop which is only a few months old. The internet security I have now was recommended to me by the guy who mended my PC, supposedly THE BEST ONE EVER - NOT!!If practice makes perfect, and nobody is perfect....................................

Kaspersky is excellent, and is free if you have Barclays online banking. Widely available under £30 if not.
Or follow RIK's suggestion for free ones, I would add Microsoft Security Essentials to that list.
PS: did you use the Norton Removal tool to get rid of Norton-just uninstalling it through the Control Panel will never flush it all out.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
What was the av you had before this one?:idea:0

I'm going to be wanting anti-virus and firewall for DS' new lappy so I'm watching this thread with interest.
What is the general consensus on Microsoft's free AV and Windows in-built firewall? Are they good enough? Will they tick over quietly in the background and make life simple for non-techie DS?
I've never used Avast but have heard good things about it, so that's an alternative, but we would still need a firewall. Suggestions?
I've used AVG and Zone Alarm hapily for years on my old lappy, but I think ZA might be a bit user-intensive for DS. Also, this combo doesn't seem to be working at best on my desktop since I replaced McAfee with them a few months ago. I did my best to fully remove McA but wondering if it's still in there acting up?
EDIT: Just seen this AVG package for bargain price of £18 for 2-year 3-user licence, and wondered if anyone has any experience of it? I've used the free AVG anti-virus for years and been very happy with it, but never tried their firewall/IS package.2021 Targets

If you use a router with a built in firewall then windows firewall is fine. In fact windows firewall is better to use than most 3rd party firewalls (Including the now very poor zonealarm)
So id recommend AVAST or AVIRA (But MSE would be fine) and windows firewall
I would NOT recommend that AVG package, mainly because it comes with avgs firewall which is VERY poor
As for mcrapee ~
Use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL

The lappy is for DS to take to uni so good firewall is important. Hmm, not sure what to go for now in that department.2021 Targets

Comodo is the best free firewall around (Id use it myself, but my printer wont work with it on for some reason):idea:0
