Contents Insurance

Were moving in a couple of weeks time and we received 2 renewal quotes, one for this house which is more or less the same as last year and then one for the new house which has gone up by over 100%
meaning nearly £200 extra....

We really can't understand it as the place we are moving to seems a better area, mainly elderley people living there and the increase seems horrendous...

It seems a hell of a lot to pay. We've checked other places such as Aviva, Direct Line and the comparison sites which don't seem to be playing ball as the cheapest quote is for people in retirement and i have checked that i have put my date of birth in correctly.

Direct Line seem to be coming up slightly cheaper is there any others we could try? Dread to think what the car insurance will go up by..

You could try a local human broker.

Another explanation is that the area has experienced a high claims rate.

    Thanks might try a broker..

That's what we were thinking, but when we researched the area it appears to be a lot better than here...though maybe the main road that we're now on makes a difference as they think people will be going by all the time....

I hope it isn't worse than this area, as we have enough problems with the drunks etc...
  • How nice an area isnt necessarily a low claim area.

    - could be a flood risk area
    - could attract more thefts as its a "nice" area
    - could be the majority being old are dropping items left right and centre causing massive AD claims
    - could be an area of fraudulent claims

all ifs and buts my point is if you think its a nicer area then it probably is but thats not what insurance goes off.

We were just comparing it to this area as we found out later this is a rough area to live in and even the devil wouldn't stay here at the weekends...

Suppose you shouldn't look at streets as upmystreet, they give you a false impression of crime i suppose...

The point that Stephen is making is that it's not just about crime.

The area could have a tendency to subsidence. That can happen in an area that looks nice.
There could be a lot of flood claims.
I live in an upmarket area but it has subsidence and floods.
I can't always get my insurance on the internet and have to go through manual underwriting, but it's really the posh end of town.

Insurance is not just about theft.
It's about about subsidence, fire, flood.
Exposed areas might for example have more storm damage claims.

This has nothing to do with whether it's upmarket or downmarket.
Also some upmarket nice areas are targetted by burglers.

It sounds like you've bought a second house or BTL property.
I realise 100% increase seems steep but is £200 really disastrous?
If so then I'm afraid the answer is to check the prices before getting the house. Sorry if that's not what you wanted.

No we're renting hence why i said contents only, spent two months looking for somewhere and this was the best one by far out of our limited options.....£200 is a hefty amount to us...As far as we have established there is no flooding or subsidence but i appreciate that insurance is abotu a whole manner of things...

Can i ask for those that know insurance, presumably when renting you wouldn't need home emergency cover as that would be more things that go wrong with the building wouldn't it?
