I am on benefits which doesn't help. Many thanks.

Nah that won't matter one bit, my wife has never worked a day in her life and has a CC with Santander with a 3K limit. (Nah well, she has worked before, just not when she got the card).

The only lender leary of benefits and usually reject card applications are MBNA.

Be aware of one thing though...if you do get into trouble with Santander, they can dip into your bank account to take money to off set the debts you may incur on your CC if you get into problems paying it back.

There is no reason for you to be worried because you have applied for it.

Agreed, might even be a good indicator of whether the person is credit worthy/whether there is anything adverse on a credit file that may need to be looked at.
If you are accepted it doesn't mean that you have to use the card.

If the answer then is that you don't want the card, cut it up and you are no worse off than you were before.

On both those points, just something to be weary of, doesn't Santander also have a doormancy fee of what i have heard? Might be best to cancel it if it is the case, regardless of whether she decides to keep it or not unless she will use it at least once a year.
After you have read other people's advice and thought about the benefits or otherwise, take a little time to decide whether you really want the card or not. I would speak to someone you trust and who knows you well and is familiar with any personal limitations that you may have, before taking a final decision.
