I could give 99% of it away and still have enough for all the fast cars, drugs and hookers I could possibly manage to cram into my remaining years on the planet.

I do hope you are not having to go without to much. :D

You could be in the relative poverty debate we had yesterday . :)

Similarly if the rules allow a company to run itself in a manner to minimise its tax burden then why criticise it for doing so - the company itself exists to provide its investors with a return on that investment and it is for the investors to decide how to distribute that return, in the US this is often via charitable donation.

In the USA there is (maybe was), a much abused tax avoidance scheme. My late Uncle's Corporation used to donate money to a Church. Who then gave then hand-out personally. He even had his own dog collar. To fund the operations of the Church, a transaction charge was processed in handling the funds.

Far more than you probably realise. Bob Wilson the ex Arsenal goalkeeper started the Willow Foundation in memory of his daughter who died with a terminal illness 6 days before her 32nd birthday.

Many members of the football fratenity give their time to make a dream come true in the form of a lifetime experience for those who aren't as fortunate as themselves. As an example both Wenger and Ferguson are extremely accomodating and promote active participation from their playing squads.

Surprisingly, a footballer who I thought was king of the Chavs actually runs a charitable foundation based in Sierra Leone.

Excuse me for not being hugely impressed by the generosity of billionaires with more money than they could possibly ever spend. If I had Bill Gates's cash, I could give 99% of it away and still have enough for all the fast cars, drugs and hookers I could possibly manage to cram into my remaining years on the planet.

You sure you could get all you want with £35 mill?! not reall tht bad tyhough for 1% of his wealth though.. can you imagine the tax bill?!?!?!?!

Midge Ure was half of the power behind Band Aid, Sir Bob was the face as well as the other half.
