Hi guys you have always been really helpful in the past. I was wondering if there is a os way of cleaning rust off a bike wheel. I have tried cleaning wadding stuff and although it cleans a little of it off, not all of it will unless I plan on cleaning it for a long time. Any suggestions ? The bike is okay and so are the wheels, apart from the rust obviously.

have you tried a potato cut in half?
seriously if you rub a raw potato on rust it is meant to come off pretty easily and then just cleaning with a mild solution of soapy water0 -
or wd40 and a baron greenback0

scouring powder and vinegar paste daubed on and then left for a while.Use wire wool or scratchy scourer to wash it off.
You can get a thingummy for cleaning rust off in DIY places. It looks like a rubber block but a bit gritty and you wet the area and rub the rust.
Oh used it on handlebars that had spots of rust and they came up like new.0 -
Hi Kal,
I got some rust off my son's bike using WD40 and an old brillo pad.

A new bike we have has been left outside and has surface rust on it. We tried to remove the rust with a brillo pad, its tedious and some is a bit more persistent than surface rust, should i use a wire wheel on the end of a drill, then spray WD40 on the bike (and put it away in the shed as should have been done in first place!) or will a wire wheel ruin the surface. Really I'm finding it hard work and i'm tired, is there an easy and effective way?0

Fluff I have tried brasso and it is no good for rust removal but great to shine up bits that are not rusty. Brasso is also great for my jewellery! I am going to Halfords now to get the rust eater.0

Hi waaag,
We have an earlier thread on cleaning bike wheels that has some tips in that could help you so I have added your post onto it.
