No sound with our camera video's or CD's

Have a fairly new Windows 7 computer and can't get any sound from our camera video's or CD's (sound is OK with U Tube, websites etc so we know it should work).
Someone suggested I down load VLC, which I've done, but now this seems to be zipped and I can't open! Have googled un-zipping software, but all seems a bit mind boggling and don't know which to use (& of course I want a free one!)
Any suggestions please?
