That was main;y because they air lifted Richard Hammond to hospital after yesterday's accodent - but then i think any Air Ambulance serives deserves all the money it can get. After my auntie died my family raised 1000 for Wiltshire air ambulance, because although they were unable to save her, they got her to hospital.

They often come around my area asking for things to be put in the collection bags I gave only the other week.

Its a very good cause and one that you hope you will never need but if it wasnt for donations lives could be loosed.
  • My kids have donated their pocket money. They love watching richard on Brainiac and Top Gear. The YAA does a fantastic job. We always give them a nod when we see them fly over our house.

Personally I think it is good that people support ANY air ambulance - whether it is their own or the Yorkshire one.

It is surprising how many other voluntary funded emergency services there are. I do voluntary work for Freewheelers, a medical charity in Bristol/Bath/Somerset that provides an out-of-hours emergency motorcycle courier service for local hospitals carrying blood, drugs, x-rays, notes etc. RNLI is run by public donations and/or volunteer staff as are cave rescue, mountain rescue and in nearby Burnham on Sea the hovercraft rescue is also run by public donations. The great thing about all of these voluntary emergency services is that a) people are willing to give up their time and/or money to support them and b) they can do the job much cheaper than if they were paid for by central government with its army of administrators. Compare the cost of running hospitals with running hospices.

As an example, my own charity needs around £20K/year to fuel/tax/insure/maintain its 4 specially adapted emergency bikes. In this figure is also the cost of replacing the oldest of the 4 bikes each year so our fleet never gets out of date. For this we reckon to save the NHS a minimum of £60K/year which is what they would have to pay out on taxis if our service didn't exist. However, we can do blue lights & sirens emergency runs which a taxi can't and you could never be guaranteed to get a taxi at 11:00pm on a Friday night! If the NHS had to lease and run the bikes, provide enough trained riders to work in a shift pattern to cover the hours needed 365 days a year, plus provide dispatchers and at least one administrator then it would cost around £350K to provide. That makes our £20K/year of public donations seem like a positive bargain.

  • WOW! Someone has donated £50,000!

    Nice one:D
  • There is also a petition to keep Topgear on the air, after the accident the BBC
said they might axe it. I made a donation and was taken to the petition page.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is my local service, and I'm happy to support them at any time, but this weekend I'm even more grateful for their existence than usual, and I expect Mrs Hammond and her children are too. :D
