Due to an insurance claim I am in a position to buy a new laptop but it must come from PC World (long story!!). I have max budget of £550 and have narrowed it down to these two!!!
Any techies out there care to comment on either - pros/cons?

I have no technical knowledge so don't know which processor really is best, hesitated about a celeron M, but the Sony seemed good, but thought maybe I should be going for the duo core on the Fujitsu.
Any comments would be really helpful.

Quality wise i would go for the sony and spec wise its perfectly adequate for most users but if you are going to do more processing than a average lappy owner youll best to go for the fuji siemens.0

Go for the Fujitsu IMHO. Most notebooks are made by OEM manufacturers anyway. With notebooks it is best to go for the best specs if you are on a budget. Budget notebooks are not really built to withstand much punishment anyway since lower build quality reduces costs. For example the budget notebooks tend to have insufficient reinforcement of the screen areas. Notebooks higher up in any manufacturers range tend to have much stronger screen reinforcement.
The Sony is overpriced anyway and the core duo of the Fujitsu is current technology where the Celeron M is a budget processor.
If you want to run MS Vista eventually the Fujitsu should be OK with it as long as you upgrade the memory to 1gb.0 -
I've just bought the sony (FS515E), its a lovely machine, xblack widescreen monitor, plenty of power from the celeron M pentium, and easily one of the best looking laptops out there IMO, i decided on it over several toshiba satillite pros with the new duo processors because TBH i have no need for that high a spec right now, and the better 'quality' duo laptops were out of my budget anyway, it depends what you are using it for? for general office type work (WP, SS, DTP, DB), internet, viewing multimedia, multiple routine tasks etc, it will be fine (or that is what i was told), for advanced camera/movie editing and stuff you would need a higher spec, but i have no need for that anytime soon, and even when i do todays technology will then be yesterdays, i'd personally go with the sony (well, i have gone with it, lol), but up to you, if you need the duo processor take the F-S, good luck0

Go for the Duo. It will have better battery life and processing power than the Sony. The Celeron M has the power saving bits of the Pentium M lopped off whereas the Core Duo does not!!
Unlike a desktop you cannot upgrade a notebook that easily. Fujitsu notebooks are built well from the few I have seen.0 -

Out the 2 i would go for the sony only because of my past experiences owning fujistu siemen stuff which i found sadly lacked good reliability and build quality.
Btw have you thought about a toshiba laptop? ive always found them well built and well speced for the money.0 -
I dunno about that. Sony is not all that reliable:

In the end at this price point corners are being cut anyway! If you are looking for a notebook for portable use you will need to spend more money IMHO!!
I would second also having a look at Toshiba notebooks too!!0 -
Not owned a sony laptop so cant say if they are all that reliable but i guess with most electrical stuff youre going have your odd bad uns somewhere.0
