Can anyone shed any light on this problem please,

I'm in the process of buying a nearly new car from Motorpoint in Burnley

I have just had a call off them telling them my car (a Renault Scenic) has shown on on a HPI check as being written off in the past by the insurance company (a cat 2)

This was a total and massive shock to me

however I'm after advice and guidance
here is the back ground

My previous car was a Renault Scenic, with a personalised reg plate, (which I retained and transferred to this current car also a Renault Scenic)

this car was written off after a smash

I then went out and bought another Renault Scenic, which I transfered my previous reg no onto it

this car was bought off a policeman, who I have spoken to earlier tonight, who has confirmed the following the car was not a write off, he bought the car from new, he was the only owner, I am the second owner.

he also pointed out (which I had forgotten) that I had a HPI check done on this car, which showed up he had not finished paying for the car, and we had to sort this problem out before I bought the car. which I did

Motorpoint have phoned today and have stated the following, after a HPI check my car has shown up as cat C (which means its been written off, or so I led to believe)

also when I went to buy the car I took a friend with me, who is actually an assessor for a leading insurance company, he gave the car the once over checking for obvious signs, which he couldn't find any signs what so ever, I assume he must of advised me to get a HPI check done as well, which showed up finance still showing on the car

can anyone please shed any light and offer any advice, hopefully what I've mentioned above makes sense, my heads cabbaged now with this

any help advice would be appreciated

thanks

I had this problem once, I bought a Mazda mx5 from an import auction. I had a cherished number from an old historic Landrover that had been stolen and not recovered. I had to wait a year for my number to be released by DVLA. When I got the number back I put it on the Mazda.
When it came to sell the Mazda I advertised it in Autotrader, a Mazda dealer down south rang me to buy the Mazda, everything was going smoothly until they did a hpi check on the Mazda. It came up as a stolen Landrover, I couldn't believe it, it had been 18 months or more since the Landrover had been reported stolen.
I rang DVLA and they blamed the hpi company the dealer had used. They said hpi companies buy discs that update there records and this particular company hadn't renewed their disc, so their info was out of date. There was nothing I could do, these companies have to buy the information to update their records and it depends on how often they change their information.
You need to try to investigate what has happened. It seems the hpi company that Motorpoint use has out of date information. What is more confusing for you is that the cherished number came off a Scenic that was written off and put on a Scenic that wasn't written off and somehow in the mists of time these two different vehicles have morphed into one. You may have to try DVLA and see if they can help.
The two Scenics may have the same reg no. but will have different chassis and engine numbers, you will have to delve a lot deeper.
Hope this is of some help, and not added to your confusion.

  • The joys of private number plates, eh...? They spack the whole system up, again!

OP - what was the date of the car being written off?

    emmell,

    thanks for your input,

    harveybobbles,

according to the details provided by Motorpoint

my previous Scenic was written off on 18.Aug.04
    which sounds about right

my new Scenic (with transferred plate) was registered on the 14.Sep.04

I have since had my own HPI check done via online site tonight, what came out was:

Insurance Write-off, This vehicle may be recorded as a write off, however, as it has undergone a plate transfer further investigation is required, please call xxx xxx xxx

the above comment explains the reg transfer to me anyway

Surely this is where the VIN sorts out the confusion?

I'm sure with the VIN, things should clear up.

prior to buying the car I had my own HPI check
this only showed up outstanding finance, this was cleared before paying for the car
as I had a second HPI check to confirm this was clear

no sign what so ever on 2 HPI checks about a Cat C write off

so why is it showing up now

Which reg no did it have on when you hpi'd it? As for the vin no, it made no difference whatsoever to my Mazda. The Mazda main agent chose to believe their own hpi check, the Honda dealer I then p/ex'd it with knew it was the cherished plate that had caused the c*ck up.

    Update

phoned the DVLA this morning,:mad::mad::mad::mad:

I swear it must be easier to speak to someone on the moon, rather then get through to someone at the DVLA

anyway after getting passed from pillar to post, extension to extension, I finally managed to speak to a human voice

she informed me that the write off bit will always show up as it is connected to the registration plate, not necessarily the car, she also informed me that Motorpoint should do a HPI check on the new reg issued by the DVLA for my Renault Scenic

coincidently this is the same reg as the one I bought it with, the same one where I did 2 HPI checks on prior to buying the car

Bearing in mind I had already emailed Motorpoint to explain what had happened the previous evening

however all this still gave me a sleepless night

so after speaking to the DVLA, I phoned Motorpoint back, at least now Motorpoint seemed to understand what had happened, and where a little more understanding
when I explained what the DVLA had said about the reg plate and to do a HPI on the new reg number, they requested further information about my written off car (which I now have)

next thing I found it unbelievable when they asked me did I want to pick up the car tomorrow

I have provisionally agreed to pick it up next week now

so thanks to all for the input/advice
