Does anyone know which is the best bank to open a current account with, which does not make large charges against your account when you use your account card abroad, ie shopping in France.

Cavvy,
You need to open a Nationwide Flex account.
Their debit card has no overseas exchange rate loading fee, nor do they charge for cash withdrawls, although, as in the UK, you may be charged by the local machine.
The credit card will charge you if used in an cash machine but should be free for purchases.
Make sure you check the bill as you sign and make sure it is in Euros. Some retailers try to charge you in £'s at an uncompetitive exchange rate.
Have a good trip!

They are a bit strict with their criteria I think you need to be British citizen and registered with the electoral roll.0
