I'm 65 and car insurance has gone up from £329 to £1040!!

Do all insurers penalise you for turning 65? I can't believe the price quoted for renewal. I have 10 years+ ncb and no accidents since the last renewal but turned 65 in March.

Thanks guys, I am doing that but am curious about whether this is something that all insurers do when you hit a landmark birthday.

Definitely not! I'm 68 years old. My insurances the last 3 years were
    ~ 2008 £202 with 4 yrs n/c (RAC),
    ~ 2009 £166.49 with 5 yrs n/c (Sheila's Wheels) and
~ 2010 £220.38 with 6 yrs n/c (MoreThan) but this was because my status had to be changed from social to commuting as I have gone back to work!

Did you renew via a broker, btw?
I sort through all the comparison websites before I buy. I'm also a skipper and have a new insurer every year. Doesn't pay to just renew - IMVHO!

Different insurers have different target markets, so it maybe your particular insurer doesn't "like" 65 and overs, hence the massive hike to either make you profitable for them, or (more likely) encourage you to move on.

When you ever shop around, you often see massive differences between the highest and lowest quote, so hopefully there will be another insurer offering a price more in line with your current premium.

I usually change every year but have been with Sheilas Wheels for two years as their renewal was excellent last year. They have obvious decided that they no longer wish to cover over 65s. So far the best quote has been with Churchill.

I have lived in the same house for over 30 years, have the same car, no details have changed.

Remember to use cashback sites to minimise the cost of your insurance!
  • My renewal with Sheila's Wheels this year (social only) was £202.

Pleas tell me about cash back sites - never heard of those before.
