Dog Socialisation Classes

Hello

My vet has recommended dog socialisation classes for my 2 year dog, who is petrified of strangers which turns to fear aggression.

I can only seem to find puppy socialisation classes. I live in Belfast/Newtownabbey area but am willing to travel.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You'll have a hard job finding "socialisation" classes for anything but pups.

For a dog that age, socialisation may not be the answer, and a behaviourist would be better suited.

    Something like this:

    Good luck.

  • Belfast Metropolitan College at Castlereagh offer Clicker training and agility classes on Saturday mornings.
  • I can recommend belfast dog training, i took my then puppy there for training but in the beginners class there were dogs of all ages there, they dont specifically exclude all dogs over puppy age - just explain to the man as you go in - hes the one with the big white husky type dog (or at least thats what he had when i was there). They are also fantastic, really nice man who runs it and pretty cheap as well - think they are council run/funded and use reward based training. Its a wee bit caotic but really good fun - i would recommend it for anyone who has a dog that needs training!
  • Thanks everyone for your replies, I will check out your suggestions, and hopefully find a solution!!

We took our Akita to the City of Belfast Dog Training Classes, he did the Bronze and Silver badge, he has just turned 3 and is socialised as long as another dog does not confront him and great around people - which I put down to the Club as it was always busy with people and dogs in a confined space, the staff very relaxed and friendly. The club is at the Braniel.

what about a cocker spaniel that is around 8 or 9 years old? is there any hope for him? he is, not exaggerating, a psycho! he is my girlfriends dog, he only likes her immediate family (mum dad two sistera and the two grandparents) and is very very agressive to those outside of that circle (me, others in her family and any visitors of any kind).

the main problem is, when he sees someone he doesnt like, it causes him to be agressive with those he normally isnt, and he tries to bite them too, he has bitten around 6 of the family, but as they are family they wouldnt report it or see any reason to get him trained.

the classes suggested above i doubt very much he could even go in to without biting everyone within reaching distance!
