Hi folks,

Just looking to see if anyone has experienced this same issue...

I have received a letter to say my electricity meter is getting old and needs replacing. I phone to make an appointment and ask if they can replace my economy 7 meter with a standard meter. I am told that they can only exchange like-for-like, unless they are given permission to do otherwise by my electricity company (Eon).

I am put through to Eon- I am told that:
- A standard meter costs the same as an E7,
- I do need a new meter,
- If I elect to have a standard meter, I have to pay £50!

To me, the £50 is far enough if my meter doesn't actually need changing anyway, but I really can't work out the logic of the charge if I need a new meter anyway!

Currently waiting for a callback from a manager!

Anyone experienced the same situation????

    Hello keithdc,

I think I can explain what’s going on here. The people who will have sent you a letter will be the meter operators in your area. If E.ON, this will be a company called Energy Services. This is a different company to E.ON retail who deal with the billing of gas and electricity accounts.

Did you call E.ON retail? If so, this would explain why they mentioned a £50 fee. This is down to the fact that it would be arranged via E.ON retail rather then Energy Services and this can be chargeable.

I think this may be the reason but please let me know I’ve got it wrong.

Another thing to mention is that it doesn’t matter if your standard meter is exchanged for an Economy7 style meter. Having an Economy7 meter doesn’t mean you need to be billed on an Economy7 tariff.

    Thanks
