Hi all
My HP NC4010 has suddenly started making a lot of fan type noise. I initially thought it was the cooling fan but its the hard drive.
Now the laptop starts, hard drive makes too much noise, sometimes laptop boots up normally but then you get the BLUE screen after a few seconds. The laptop has windows XP.
When re-booting, it then starts giving an error of "non-system disk or disk error. Press any key when ready".
Is my hard disk gone or can it be repaired? Its a Toshiba 40GB. What is the warranty like on these?
I've another similar but older laptop NC4000 with 60GB Toshiba HDD but without caddy. This laptop also runs XP.
Can I use this NC4000 HDD on NC4010 (use the caddy from NC4010)? Would there be any issues from motherboard, drivers etc?
Alternatively, please suggest another suitable way to procure a cheap hard drive (not too fussed with how many GBs) to get my NC4010 laptop running again as my 4yr old daughter is getting really upset!!
Many thanks for your all replies in advance..

It sounds like its on the way out.
It will be out of warranty.
Check ebuyer for a replacement harddrive.
Do you have the install disk for the 4010?0 -
if you have a laptop hard drive of the same size , or bigger , with the right ide or sata connectors then its easy to clone the old hdd to the new hdd via usb ( buy usb-ide/sata adapter from ebay)Ex forum ambassador

I do not have any install disks for 4010 as all the installation/ driver files are supposed to be on the hard drive itself. Never had to use them though..

4000 HDD is exactly similar in shape, size and connector to 4010 (but does not have the caddy). Could I swap? Would the HDD be corrupted if I do that?
I do not want to move from 1 non-working laptop to 2 non-working laptops
Thanks..0 -
Can someone please respond? Can I swap the HDD from a working nc4000 on to a working NC4020 with a very noisy hard drive?0
