When to apply?

in Credit cards
I'm currently on a 0% rate with Virgin that runs out at the December statement date. I'm planning to open a new card to transfer the balance to (will be about £5k).
Obviously I want to leave it as late as I can to apply for the new card thus maximising the benefit of my current rate and also the length of the new 0% period... but at the same time I am slightly nervous that I need to leave myself time to sort other options if I don't get the credit limit I want on a new card.
How late in the day would you leave it?

I might be wrong but I think most cards state that you should transfer the balance from 3 months of opening the card, so I would apply now.Total DebtWas £4145.81now £0.000
