ok as some may know i have techie know how with cars but this one has pickled my brain to the extent its driving me crazy.

car: as title says 1.4 16v zetec.

fine when engine is cold

symptoms:

high rev on start up cold or warm and takes a few seconds to settle

erratic idle

drinking oil

drinking fuel

stalling on depression of foot brake hard or revs will dip to around 850 rpm or 795rpm on idle and brake pedal depression.

slight smoke from exhaust but may be due to the above symptoms of oil and fuel drinking.

open oil filler cap and constant hot air forces out of it not your usual puffs or air with piston compression .

parts changed.

map sensor

Idle control valve

TPS sensor

oil temp sensor.

head temp sensor

cam sensor

crank sensor

oil filter changed

fuel filter changed

oil changed

water change

thermastat changed

ht leads changed

sparky plugs changed

coil pack changed

found air leak in manifold gasket changed rubber seals in injection manifold

found air leaks in oil breather hoses under injection manifold - oil breather housing replaced pipes and zip tied into place.

found air leak in throttle housing gasket replaced rubber gasket.

cleaned injectors replaced rubber o rings.

fault code read no faults and every thing operational as should be!

head gasget not gone have checked for oil in water and vice versa and creaming/milking no present under filler cap no loss of water!

im starting to think along the lines of valves, valve clearences, valve stems and seats. worn cams.

timing is spot on.

any advice idea to throw my way greatly recieved.

thanks!

  • Unplug the roadspeed sensor on the gearbox, these occasionally go mad and lead to high idling.

These engines do suffer worn piston rings when used for town mileage and not serviced correctly. I'd cut your losses, nothing easily solved mechnically will cause oil consumption.

How many miles has it done? Have you got the last MOT emissions report? Is the catalytic converter OK? As others have said, probably piston/ring/bore wear, or top end trouble with leaking valves.
  • currently due to weather and no cover to work on it has to stay the way it is, passed mot last week and emissions were fine cat was fine. fault code read the oxy sensor as working, its done 84,000 miles, its my bro's car and gets used on weekends dut to working through the week and may use it to shopping during the wek once a week, its been a bit of a donky IMHO back and forth under warranty when purchased the head gasket went 2 months out of warranty wich i did for him at a cost of parts only £30 for head set (replaced stem seals come to think of it when head g went) and 45 a head skim coz i warped slightly on cyl 1. he does let servicing slip by him, and regular check of the vehicle wich is downfall if things go bust big time.

ill do a cyclinder compression test wich will confirm either valve related or piston 'n' rings.

perhaps a chat with him on the likly hood of valve or pistone ring or bore seems more likely that it may be more cost effective to get a second hand engine for it rather than stipping that one. if he goes for that i'll rebuild the old one slowly will give me something to do i suppose and sell it to remake the money lost. thanks guys been helpfull confirmed what i thought thank you.
