£38 RBS bank charge for doing - nothing

each week I send to my partners account housekeeping money.

Last week she needed the money and could not wait for the 3 day transfer wait, so I drew it out and gave it to her.

I forgot to cancel the standing order that i had set up in my digtal banking.

So along came thursday, the standing order was attempted by RBS, it checked my account, saw the money was'nt there, did'nt transfer any cash to my partners account, and slapped me with a 38 quid charge.

Only noticed this morning after this weeks wages went in.

I've contacted the branch, and the manager is going to call me back.

How can they charge me 38 quid for doing nothing? They didnt lend me any cash, they didnt pay a bill for me, they just did a check, saw the money was not there, and bank £38 quid.

  • Taz - if you don't have an overdraft and YOU decided to withdraw the money before the standing order went out and YOU then forgot to cancel the standing order - then there's little you can complain about - maybe the bank will refund some of the money. Good luck.

I dont have an overdraft, but I never made any unauthorized borrowing.

because the money wasnt there, the standing order didnt complete.

    I never went overdrawn.

But they still hit me with 38 quid.

You instructed the bank via S/O to transfer monies to another account. The bank would have tried to take that money, and because you didn't have the money within the account it would have been rejected, therefore you never went overdrawn. BUT, it's the same principle as writing a cheque for an account you don't have the funds it. It will be returned and you will be charged a fee for processing/admin. That's what they have done.

If you're usually pretty good with your account you may well get that charge refunded. It certainley won't hurt to try. I would if i were in your shoes.

exact same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago with RBS - never received a letter or any contact from them. Sent a letter and got it refunded after a couple of weeks but it took 3 letters.

  • hey all.

got on to them, cried poverty, which i'm in.

the manager, nice lady, said she would fully refund the 38 pounds.

I think RBS should rethink their policy.

38 quid is a bit steep. if it was like 18 quid....and even that is a rip off, it would be a lot easier to absorve...

I've only everhad one issue with them before, they agreed to half the charge.

on that occasion they did pay the DD and I went overdrawn so I was happy with the outcome.

This time, I felt really sore, but the manager of the harwood brach kissed it better and made my day.

Doubt they would be so helpful in future but im happy with the outcome.

    thanks RBS
