I know a bit about this but only because I am awful when having anaesthetic. I am violently sick for several hours and feel ill for days on end. Other people seem to wake up and can eat within a few minutes and they are fine. That is for the general anaesthetic, I have had sedation for both dental and other procedures and was not sick but the effects last a lot longer on me that they seem to on others. I just had a look at what I was given for sedation and for all you experts it was Midazolam 2mg IV and Pethidine 50 mg IV.
Anyway MimiF they have probably suggested sedation so they can work on him quickly and he will not be unduly anxious about it all. If they had to keep stopping and starting in between fear and tears it might be a lot worse.0 -

MimiF, please recheck the fasting time with the hospital/dentist before you decide what time to feed your child for the last time. Don't guess, because the consequences can be severe.
Many hospitals still tell people to fast from midnight etc as it stops people from eating at the wrong times, and getting confused about things - people are so used to hearing that they have to fast from the night before, so it is easier and safe enough to tell an adult to fast from then.
Mimi, 4 hours sounds much more like it!

are you certain that it's a full on general anasthetic? when i had my wisdom teeth out, i was under sedation but not out for the count. it was something like rohypnol, the date rape drug, that i was given, it felt like i was totally drunk but in a nice way, could hear and feel things happening but it didn't feel like they were happening to me! it was all a bit strange! but i was fine after and can't really remember much.0

Thetope,
Thats exactly how they described it to me! He will be able to respond to instructions such as "open your mouth" etc. He will be conscious and "aware" of what is going on, not sure if this is a good thing or not. We will see.
Thanks

Sedation is just one of those things, you'll probably worry about it anyway... hey thats what us mums do don't we? At least you know a bit more about what will be happening, and its always good to be informed
Good luck with it all Mimi, let us know how you get on

I had sedation recently as I'm a complete wuss when it comes to dentists. I'd describe it as waking up from a really deep sleep. You kind of know what's going on some of the time but it fades in and out. I honestly don't remember much about what was going on but I must have been conscious as I could respond to instructions.
The only problem I had with it was a really bad headache afterwards and was a bit sickly. I would completely recommend it though if you're afraid of dentists.
BTW I wasn't advised not to eat before it.

I had all four wisdom teeth out at once under sedation because of aheart condition they will only use GA on me if it is totally necessary.
I am awful with dentists but this experience was fantastic. I remember very little of what went on, and what i do remember is veing very happy and not caring what they were doing to me.
The only thing to perhaps keep an eye out for is I remember being a little tearful in the recovery room when 'coming round'. Nothing to do with being upset aboutt he procedure really just the main sedation starting to wear off.
Also my ex was the person meant to be keeping an eye on me for 24 hours decided as I was all dopy in bed he would toddle off for a drink with his mates. Bad idea! I got it into my head I had to go to the shops and went wandering around cambridge in my drugged up state, somehow made it home in one peice but when he got back he found me lying under the covers giggling like a madman hiding my purchases (a technicolour wooly hat and a string of bells!)
hope this helps

ps. I was also in hospital having my appendix out at age 11. As a kid i found the experience exciting rather than scary. The nurses are always lovely and make such a big fuss of you. He'll be fine :-)hey there's no money but we couldn't be happier if we tried
