That's true, but we don't know how much the supermarkets are going to put the prices up.

Everyone is expecting a price rise when it goes up, so the supermarkets will take the opportunity to add their own increase to the price. Then blame it on the VAT.

The problem is VAT is payable on fuel, so whenever VAT goes up there will be a larger increase than the headline percentage rate because distribution is going to be factored in to the retail cost.
For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

So a basket of VAT goods costing £117.50 will go up to £120.00. I'd just make sure if you do shopping early in the month that you do it just before the new year instead. It's a lot of money to spend to just save £2.50. Any VAT on fuel can be claimed back by the supplier as an input cost so won't affect the price anyway well not as much as the high prices that the middle east is charging for it. Normal inflation will increase prices as time goes by so why not using this strategy always have a cupboard full of stock just to beat inflation. A £10 pack of beer will still be £10 as it's a price point. When they're on special next year the price point won't be £10.21 it will still be £10 until they can't do it any more at that price point and it will be £11 or £12.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
