I have had my Barclaycard now for just over a year and each month i have always paid via my Barclaycard account in full using my debit card.

Alot of my friends pay via direct debit and i was seriously going to set it up just to pay the whole amount each month.

However, having just gone through having fraudulent transactions on my account i am kind of pleased i didn't. Am i right in thinking that if i had of had it set up then it would have taken the whole amount including the transaction that wasn't mine? this would have meant i was paying a bill for over £600 when only £130 of it was mine.

How does everyone pay their bill?

Once a transaction is reported as fraudulent/double charged/claiming under the CCA it should be seperated from other transactions and put into a disputed status and passed to the relevant dept i.e disputes/fraud team. This in effect puts the reported amount into a status of suspension where charges/interest cannot be accrued and where payment does not become neccessay until the transactions have been investigated and resolved.

That's how it should work, but not all frontline CSA's are aware of these 'typical' procedures because it's out of their domain and do occassionally advise incorrectly. It helps to be forearmed when reporting such issues.

In your case, if handled correctly (and given enough time for system interaction) the DD will be ammended accordingly and those transactions deducted from the collection amount.

One reason why you should check your accounts at least weekly, ideally daily. Thirty seconds a day checking can save a whole lot of time and hassle in the long run.

Since the DD Guarantee ensures that money should not be taken out of your account without your knowledge (the bank should put you in the position you should have been if this doesn't happen) I'm failing to see the problem...
But it is the control thing.... I know exactly what the balance is in my current account in any point of time..
So do I, up to about 4 weeks hence.

After that it starts getting a little fuzzy, but I usually know to within 10's of pounds how much is going to be in there 3 months hence.

pay all my credit cards with cash at bank or post office, also pay my mortgage by cash. I do use internet banking but much prefer to use cash for paying bills. just need to remember to keep all receipts. Banks do sometimes make mistakes and it takes time to correct things, and doing it the way I do I am in full control.
Look after the pennys and the pounds will look after themselves:money:

I have a full amount set to DD on 2 accounts and a third has a 10 month 0% offer, which i'll close off when the period is up. I usually am not in the country for long periods at a go and with the statements still on paper for a lot of them, its easier than my accountant ringing me up and telling me what to pay, to have them all set to DD. But of course when i am not in the country it hardly matters as i don't use the cards too much and the bills are minimal (just re-occuring bills and what not).

Barclaycard and AMEX - DD payment in full

With Amex, i would recommend everyone setup a DD of some sort ; even in their T&C they state the liability is upon you if you don't receive a statement, to have made the minimum payment and stay within the limit provided.
