insurance claim advice

Options
I am with direct line and have submitted and insurance claim for laptop which was dropped and screen damaged.

I have had a call from avandia who deal with the claim on behalf of direct line requesting I send the laptop to then to see if it is repairabl
Question i have is can I remove the hard drive before sending it to them as i would be concerned that my bank details are on there

Any advice
Nice to save.

    You would need to check with them but I would think they will insist on the hard drive still being in the laptop so they can check if it's working.

    If they accept the claim the laptop will become their property but some companies do agree to sell the hard drives back to you if you ask them.

    I would ask them and if they insist in you sending it with the hard disk, I would make a backup and safely erase the whole thing with DBAN.

    there is no way i would do this as all my bank and credit card details would be on the laptop

    I saw a program on tv recently where people in a repair shop were accessing personal info and photos from laptops they were repairing, really puts me off sending it off.

    Think i may just order new screen and try to fit myself. Would this be advisable ? I found the screen on a website with instruction on how to replace.

    If it's not useable just now and you are not making a claim there's not much to lose (apart from the cost of the screen !) and changing a screen doesn't take long and isn't very difficult.

    Buy a USB <> SATA/IDE adapter (depending on the hard drive) and connect it to another computer. There was a thread today where somebody posted a link to a cheap adapter suitable for both types...
  • If you are technically capable .. .. .. get Hirens create a USB boot from DOS then :

    - use one of the Backup Tools to back up to your CD / DVD, then ;
    - use DBAN or KillDisk to wipe the HDD, then ;
    - when you get your puter back from Avandia use the same Backup tool to put your O/S back

    NOTE1 write down your Windows serial number product key from the bottom of the puter you may need it later.

    NOTE2 you should tell us your Operating System type, ie, Vista / Win7

    Hope this helps
