stump removal/ grinding?

can anyone recommend a way of removing a laurell tree which did have about 5 'trunks' so has left a cluster of stumps as much as a stump? I have started to dig around it, and after a while realised that wasnt an option, but was wondering if there are any chemicals I can add which after a few weeks will mean I can just burn the stumps? Ive tried a load of petrol after going ape on it with an axe, but all that did was singe the stump. Ideally I dont want to pay out for s tump grinder, but can anyone say how much this is likely to cost and how easy it might be to use if I hire one? Any other methods witbout a ton of effort?

Depends on where you are, but £60 for first hour or part thereof would be my budget, that is with an operator. IMHO way to dangerous to hire yourself, if you even can0
