When I recently totally flattened the battery on my Golf the system did not ask for the code. Asking the RAC man why he advised that the R5100 radio, when power is restored will interrogate the ECU and checks the chassis reference (PIN No) and if it considers it is still in the correct vehicle will re -programme itself. You only need the code if you are fitting the radio in a different car.

This only applies to VIN coded radios fitted into the more modern cars
  • I took the serial number from the label on the side of the unit, I have now found a partial number written on the label on the top of the unit it starts 60 but the next two numbers are not visible as the label has been rubbed away, I guess the unit has been reprogrammed at some time.
