I'll be interested in peoples answers to this, because whenever I buy anything electrical I stick the box up in the loft for a year in case I need to return it. Do I need to do that?

Of course you can claim on the warranty without having the original packaging, all you need is proof of purchase.

As KillerWatt says, you don't have to have the original packaging to claim on the warranty, though some companies say that they will not accept returns by post which are not in the original packaging.

But this is usually only for heavy or delicate items - as long as it is well packaged when returned so it doesn't get damaged in transit you should be fine.

matimage - if you have the space it's worth doing, as finding the right size box and securely packaging around large electrical items can be a real pain...

I recently bought a blender from Currys and it wouldn't fit in my rucksack. They didn't have a bag big enough either so I asked if I needed the packaging for a warranty claim - no.
I asked if I could leave the box with them and they said no problem! Without boxes it fitted in rucksack easily.
