The choice is not just between buying now, or never buying. There's also the choice of waiting to see if there's a better time to buy.

Why do I think people are so desperate to get on the property *ladder*

Culture. as hereward said earlier we as little britainers love ownership of property, gotta look at the !!!!!! of it on TV, mornings on BBC, i mean what else is there to discuss- houses, houses or houses? Nowhere else in Europe is the same most people rent.

I also think people are desperate because its been drummed into them

I additionally think that the media doesnt discuss mortgage interest and no one wants to think , oh hell, Im paying the bank £400 a month in interest...and only a fiver of it is coming off the total of the house. Any mortgage you will pay more in interest than you do in the cost of the house over 25 years. Of course here theres the mortgage free wannabeees and they are going hammer & tongs. Mention overpaying your mortgage to non-msers and GENERALLY you get looked at as if youve got 2 heads. I know Ive done it.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I think the most bizarre belief is that house prices only ever go up, so it will never be easier to buy a property than it is now. I very much want to own my own house. But the more I study the property market, the more it seems to me that buying now is a bad choice.

i agree, there is no affordable housing at all. The cheapest in Leeds is a 2 bed back to back ( imagine a terraced house chopped in two ) in a poor area for £95000 upwards. Most of the new housing stock is one or two bed flats from about £150k upwards.... Very small though.. if we started again and brought our old house we could not do it. It's supid

I totally agree, at 26, living in leeds with parents, had to use my saved house deposit for medical costs. now totally stuck, can only lend up to £55k. have been to seven auctions and all houses started at least 30k but sold for over 90k.

have only seen ONE property within my budget of 55k, and this is pushing to the max, which needs at least 20k of improvements. have also looked at Bradford, Castleford, Pontefract, Wakefield, Hull, which is two hours drive in each direction, meaning i wouldn't be able to afford to get to work, so no salary to pay the mortgage!!!

Have considered new jobs but cannot meet my salary, therefore, cannot get the same total mortgage and then subsequently cannot afford their house prices.

before anyone jumps, i am not being too picky, all i want is to be able to live somewhere other than a studio flat. also, council do not consider me as priority as mum owns her house. My cousin is currently classed as severly overcrowded in a council house, with doctors and consultants confirming this is causing some of the little one's health problems (2 girls and one boy in one room) and has been on waiting list for 3 yrs!!!

i understand some people are being too picky but some are not and are just completely stuck.

Join the gang! Only choice we have is to rent in a 'drug' zone. Not really appropriate with two kiddies :(

Wonder if we moved to Poland we would get housed quickly.........

hehe, i've been having those thoughts.

really annoys me when everyone gets the same mindset. i work with someone who has taken their house off the market as they weren't getting the offers they wanted as only(!!!!!) ftbs were showing interest (small 2bed house with living room combined with kitchen, in nicer area than where i currently live with mum but our house is tons bigger) and it would mean moving out of the nicer area which she couldn't possibly consider... she was brought up in an area even i wouldn't consider as i its not safe in the daytime. i sometimes have to drive thorough it on my way home from work and its a regular occurence to have bricks and fireworks thrown at your car.

with kids, i definately agree it needs to be a reletively clean and decent area. even if this means the bad stuff is still happening but at least out of sight.

I just want to be able to have somewhere to call mine......

they should take some legal advice on this. It sounds to me like they may well fall under the reasonableness to occupy regs. they should speak to shelter about this.

But dont forget, that its not YOURS until the mortgage is completely paid off. the bank can take it back off you until that date if they so choose, or you run into adverse financial difficulty. I call my flat *mine* in the same way Id call a rented flat mine ( ie come round mine for a pizza) but its not mine, is it? And wont be till the mortgage is settled.

And after it's paid off, the NHS can force you to sell it.
