Car insurance help

Hello

I will try to keep this as simple as i can, but please try and keep up with me as i really need help and direction!

I am advertising my current car for sale and expect it so sell shortly. The insurance on my current car runs out on 14th September, at this point i will have earned myself 1 years no claims bonus.

I am taking delivery of a new car on Friday (27th) August and looking to insure this for a full year. However, the insurance companies i have been with touch with still class me as having 0 years claims, which is bringing back a hefty insurance quote.

I have been told by Aviva that if i was to ring up my current insurance company (ecar) and cancel early they could still class the time i have served as 1 year no claims, but they wont do that, they are saying i will loose my no claims if i cancel early.

Really stuck and don't know what to do that is not going to cost me a fortune.

Many thanks for your time.

Craig

Have you tried on-line to see if you can amend your e-car policy to include the new car?

I use e-bike and you can do this on-line to see what the increase will be.

Strictly speaking you won't have earned 1 years no claims until 14th Sept, so you can't make use of it before that date.

But I don't understand why you can't amend and use your current policy.

Ecar normally allow this on-line with no admin charges as it's automatic and has no manual intervention.
You can go through and see the premium increase without committing.

    Have you done this?

I suspect you are looking at a cheaper quote from Aviva but on the basis of one years no claims which you won't actually be entitled to on 27th Aug.

So have you checked the cost with ecar, to amend for the remainder of the year?

Have you considered or asked about delaying your delivery?
You never know, the company making the delivery might be mightyily relieved and might bite your hand off.
  • Thanks for your advise.

I have e-mailed e-car to see if this was possible i didn't think you could do it online and see what the difference would be, i will check that out now.

I could delay the delivery yes, but that doesn't really bother me to be honest i have a secure garage it can stay in until this can all be sorted, just means i have no transport in the meantime.

    Thank you for your time.
  • It should be a simple process craig, change of vehicle on your current policy to your new car and then add on your old car as a tempory additional vehicle until the end of the policy term (14/9).

From then you are looking at obtaining quotes on your new car with your 1 years NCD. The only problem arises if you havnt sold the old car by the 14th making sure if you move insurers the new company will also tag on your old car as a tempory vehicle. Expect to pay for tempory additional vehicles.

I dont know ecar in anyway shape or form so wether they follow this pretty simple process I dont know !
  • Do i still need temp cover even if i have sold my old car?

For example if i sell my car today, and then change my policy details to my new car from friday 27th unitl 14th september, i could just have that new car soley on the insurance?

Just ran through it all and it came back as £124, not too bad i suppose.

Many thanks for all your help, not panicing anymore lol.

    No.

Why not put your old car off the road, and swap over cars on your current policy. That way you can drive the new car as soon as you get it.

(Is it brand new - most main dealers do free insurance for 7/10 days when you buy a brand new car, makes it easier to get it taxed. Or you could consider the cooling off cancellation wheeze (where you take out a new policy but cancel it within the 14 day cooling off period. The downside to this is that if you make a claim during the period, then you can't cancel).

no not at all if you sell today just instigate a change of vehicle from friday on your current insurance the temporay additional vehicle is just a way of getting both on cover if it takes you a few more days to sell the current car.

long and short should be no need to cancel your existing policy allowing it to run to the end and collect your NCD first year is invaluable
  • No the car is not brand new so i don't think they offer that.

Many thanks for all your support. I'm going to sell my car as soon as i can and if i fail to sell it before Friday then keep the new car off road, and change the policy details with e-car when ever needed to last me until 14th September, then go back to Aviva with 1 years NCB.

    Thank you!! :j
