Do you not have to offer Paypal though if you have a limited history on Ebay?

Cars are exempt from the paypal requirement for all users. All users though must accept paypal on everything other category, and in some categories it is paypal only with no other options available.

Not exactly fresh news seeing as it came in 18 months ago! I love it when people have their finger on the pulse.

No No and thrice no. Cars are exempt from the paypal requirement, DO NOT under any circumstances accept it for a car. Cash on collection only.

Thanks for that soolin! I was a little concerned about using Paypal, so glad to know we can ask for cash instead - a weight of my (and my sisters) minds!

You can also try refunding 1p to the buyer. Reports previously showed this freed all the account balance, but Paypal might have caught on by now.
Just a little note- don't do this- paypal get very suspicious (and may close accounts etc) and it simply doesn't work anymore.

There are many reasons that this hold can be put in, (also including first sale and then 30 days after) but the OP has had it due to low stars by the looks of this bit:
I can see that you have an eBay feedback score of less than 100 and an
average Detailed Seller Rating of less than 4.5.
That is quite low by ebay's standards, which means to paypal that there may be a potential problem.

This has been brought in so that sellers can't just run off with the money, as paypal will now refund buyers even if the paypal account is empty, so blame bad sellers making it awkward for everyone.

EDIT: I didn't mean that to sound as if I was calling the OP a bad seller, I'm not, a low volume seller can get to those levels very easily with one or two awkward buyers.
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine. :p

On the subject of cars - ask for a small deposit via paypal and the rest as cash on delivery.

As for this new policy from Paypal - I say it's been a long time coming!! I have had a few parcels go missing and have been unable to receive a full refund due to the seller having insufficient funds. For example: I paid £25 for a coat, 4 weeks later no sign, emailed seller and she gave me a story about her husband selling it before running off with the next door neighbour (and my cash!). I received a massive 9p refund. As long as Paypal do release the funds as soon as you've received positive feedback I see no problem.
    Thanks to all posters :A

Please note the 'casual Ebayers' part of the thread title. Also, this has not happened to me for the other 2 things I've sold over the past 12 months.
