What type of building insurance do I need?

My mother lives in my house rent free - no tenancy agreement involved. She has her own contents insurance but I am unsure what type of building insurance I should take out. Do I just need a normal policy stating that my house is lived in by a relative or do I need a 'landlord' type policy? I have had conflicting advice but am sure I will get the correct answer on this forum. Many thanks.

Do you have a tenancy agreement and / or collect any rent from her ?0

No agreement and she lives entirely rent free but the bills are in her name including council tax0

It's difficult to say which type of policy you would need as each company can view it differently.
You need to speak to the Insurers and check with them how they view it, some would say a normal house insurance, some a landlord policy and some would decline to quote.
You might find it easier to speak to a local broker (Not Swintons) as they come up against this a lot so will know who different companies treat it. I would strongly recommend you clearly write on any proposal form that your mother lives their rent free to avoid any mistakes0 -
Ok thanks - will do that. I didn't think it would be straight forward.0

Shouldnt end up being complicated I suspect it will fall under a landlords policy which are just as easy to setup if not easier than a standard house insurance.
As suggested speak to a broker a decent one should have you up and running in no time with the right policy0 -
Sorry this is not an answer to OP.
I am desperate to get Building insurance for my empty property which my OH is renovating. I go online for quotes, then I have to ring a number as they can't quote on line, they say they will ring back then they don't. I am awaiting a call tomorrow from a local broker and I will see how that goes, but they seem reluctant when renovations are being mentioned. Nothing major.0 -

Try AUL, insurance for empty properties being worked on is expensive and the cover is normally restricted. http://www.aul.co.uk/0 -

Thank you. We used to be with them but when it was renewal time, I thought we were going to have someone in the house staying, so said we didn't need special insurance. However there was a change of plan. Maybe I should try them again and see what they say as the house is still empty.0 -
UKfacilities will probably cover it. However if youve a broker contacting you see what they suggest as they should be able to place it for you.0
