MBNA - Don't touch them

I am absolutely furious. I have been with MBNA for about 8 years and never missed or been late with a payment. I paid last month and my payment must have just missed the deadline and and gone through on the next day. THEY CHARGED ME £12 FOR A LATE PAYMENT PLUS £8.43 INTEREST. I rang to point out I had never been late and that the money had left my bank account in good time and the man on the phone was so rude I cut up my card while I was talking to him and there was no offer of a refund as this was a one off. Needless to say I will not be using them again, but also wanted to warn anyone thinking of joining them!!

Most credit cards offer internet banking where you can be notified of payments made and reminders of payment deadlines, thereby avoiding this situation ever arising.0 -

and they also give high limits good 0% interest deals, and only search experian
so in a nut shell be warned of a crappy charge which may happen after 8 years and steer well clear yeah????
so should we all be goin the cap1 aqua and 39.9% to 60% vanquis route instead then?
im thinkin emmmmm...... NO0 -
Mbna are actually very good at refunding the £12.00 fee if you call/email and apologise explaning it was on oversight or in your case a genuine error, i cancelled direct debit and they still took the payment i emailed explaining i had paid balance in full days before but i appreciated there was a communication oversight, they refunded my money0

You could pay by Direct Debit in future - this makes it their problem not yours to collect/make payment.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j
Do something amazing. GIVE BLOOD.0 -
Wow, you were late with a payment and so we should all close our accounts with them?!
Maybe you were were a bit off with them judging by the tone of your post and that was the reason why they didn't refund you...
As said prev, set up a Min Direct debit on any 0% deal to save this hassle.0 -
I am kinda sick of people whinging about how *their* bank or *their* credit card company is so awful for charging late payment, overdraft fees or otherwise. They ALL do it (practically).
Don't get me wrong I think it is disgraceful that banks and credit card issuers can get away with charging such disproportionately high fees for these things. But the problem is with the industry, not with any particular institution. I have 5 different credit cards with 5 different banks and they all without exception charge a £12 late payment fee.0 -
I can understand the OP frustration, as it does seem that handling your account for so long very reponsible doesn't count for anything. But of course the £12 is auto charged by a computer, so that isn't going to understand a normally very responsible customer.
However, going by the OP post, when they rung up they probably put the CS agents back right up by talking to them in the manor of their post.
Having worked in CS for 20+ years, I know I'm more inclined to help someone who is polite or at least reasonable in the manor they speak to me, rather than someone who just shoots their mouth off.
I had a late payment £12 charge off Natwest years ago, after years of managing my account without issue, it frustrated me, but ultimately I knew I was in the wrong, so just accepted it and moved on.0 -
They are no worse than any other so take a chill pill. It's automated so you were in the wrong whether you like it or not - phone up and speak to a human being nicely and you may get a refund. Virgin charged us a fee for stopping a dd even though we'd settled the account in full prior to it being due - there own statement proved it - although we were livid we phoned and kept cool and they reimbursed the money.
Thats one of the reasons they all need real people at the end of phonelines.0 -

Sorry to hear the problems. Myself have always found them excellent and the staff brilliant. I hasten to add I treat them with respect and they in turn treat me the same.
They are great for promotional offers and are one of my best cards.0
