Overseas payments

Hello,

I've got a buyer that has just won one of my auctions and he's from the USA. He has asked me to work out how much he owes me in US dollars and then he can send me a cheque. Is this wise as I have had a US cheque before and the bank charged me to cash it. I did state on the auction that I would take UK sterling palpal payments only for overseas.

This is my first overseas buyer so has anyone got good experience of taking these sort of payments and what advice can you give me.

Thanks in advance.

Point him to your conditions of sale and tell him that he must comply with paying via Paypal in Sterling as stated or you will report him as a NPB! ;)

You will be charged for cashing foreign cheques so it's up to you if you want to take that risk.

Have you stated "I only accept GBP £ Sterling" in your auctions? - although I have it - 3 times!!! and people ignore it!icon8.gif

See if they can pay via alternative methods - or try saying that unfortunately to accept the $ you would be charged around £10 - it is for my bank!icon8.gif so would he pay that? - can you use paypal?

Otherwise www.auctionpix.co.uk are good at cashing american dollars! They send you a cheque in sterling and only charge around £1.75 They are fast too!

In future state clearly your methods of payment. icon7.gif

    - I still have a cheque for Canadian Dollars I don't know what to do with......so any suggestions anyone? .....auctionpix don't deal with These!!icon9.gif

My auction terms are quite clear in that I state, twice, that for non UK buyers I only acept paypal in UK sterling funds. Yet I still get buyers from the US emailing me for my address so they can send a cheque.

In the past I've gone to the trouble of trying to accomodate these buyers and most of the time it ends badly. Now I am very firm from the outset, my terms are as stated and if they cannot comply then I will go through the NPB basis and reclaim my fees. That usually works and they manage to pay by paypal.

Do not accept cheques, money orders or any other form of foreign postal order, they all end up costing the receiver a lot of money.

What about if he converts money to sterling in his country to something like a bankers draft. Would it still cost me to cash it even though its in sterling?

He is asking to send me a internation money order now.....
  • If you look on Paypal it will calculate sterling into US dollars - then you can tell the American eBayer how much it will cost them in dollars and when the cash is in your Paypal account you can transfer it for free in your account to sterling.
    All credit cards paid off.
