Preparing for baby 2 cots, beds and sleeping arrangements

Hi all :hello:
I have some time to think about it and am wondering what to do about where toddler and baby 2 will sleep?

we have a 3bed house toddler is in own room in cotbed (still as cot) its a box room.

I bought and built an ikea daybed for room 3 aka (store/spare/guest room). which has never been used.

for the first few weeks baby will be in with us in moses basket -I dont know whether to....
a) buy another cot / cotbed for baby and bung in room 3 which
will then be crowded
b) just buy a kiddie bed for toddler in room 3
c) use day bed for toddler but I worry as its high and doesnt have
safety rail
d) dismantle daybed and put in garage and use room 3 for both kids - but my feeling is once you take things apart they never seem to
go back the same as when first built

what are your thoughts and experiences please, is it wise for me to have both in the same room?

I would put toddler in the larger of the 2 rooms, make a big thing of letting him choose how he wants it, and put the baby in the smallest room. I wouldn't want them in the same room with the baby waking up the toddler, one awake during the night is enough.

    Agree with Peachy.

We moved our son into the bigger room when I was expecting his sister. We also potty trained him the same week! eek!! No problems with the transition from cot to bed (with guard rail) and he was fully settled before his sister arrived.

We just had them both in the same room for a weeks holiday and as soon as DS woke at around 6.30ish she woke him up too. No problem with this at home as they are in different rooms. You do not want to be 'shushing' your new baby all the time for fear of waking your toddler.

I left toddler in the smallest room and kept baby in a cot in our room for 6 months (as per FSID guidlelines). After that toddler was moved to larger room and baby went into small room.

Depending how old your toddler is i would avoid anything high off the ground.

Agree with toddler bed in other room when baby is 6 mths then baby and toddler have room each and toddler could for one or two nights sleep on the floor/ airbed in yours/babies room if you had guests

Is the ikea bed too big for the toddler to use?

We moved toddler (19 mths) into larger room and a proper bed and purchased a bed gaurd few weeks before baby was due, we had already converted the cotbed into a bed as by 12mths he was climbing out and landing head first!! We did it before baby was born as didn't want him to feel he was being turfed out of his cot & room. He was fine never fell out and loved his 'big' bed.

Cot came back into our room for first 4mths then moved baby into the box room, I know this is earlier than the recommended 6mths but I am such a light sleeper that she only had to move and I was awake......had a monitor & door was open.

well at first thats what I was thinking but Im not sure I could attach a safety rail to it

The safety rails are normally held down by the weight of the mattress, with poles that run under it and just slighty up the otherside, you do not have to attach it to the bed, see below.

If it is a day bed with a rail across the back, couldn't you just turn it round and put against the wall so that the rail is at the front, then toddler can't fall out.

I would go with the OPS idea of baby in your room for 6month then in to box room & elder child in to larger room just so your eldest doesn't feel they are been thrown out of there room the minute the baby is here as it is a confusing time for them anything you can do to keep routine normal for them should help.

The rail the Op posted are great we have had no problems with ours.
When we moved our DS in to his big bed we let him choose his own
'big boys quilt cover' he was so excited about sleeping in it with the quilt he had picked it was an easy transition.
Funny thing is three years later he still calls his bed his 'BOB' because he picked a bob the builder quilt at the time & my mum,in-laws, bro & sis-in law have all admitted they call there beds that too now after been round him it's sort of stuck!.
