Get a bike! walk, run or catch a bus.

    Benefits?
    Less Pollution
    Get Fitter
Reduce the number of cars on the road
    Reduce traffic congestion
    Ecologically friendly
Not having to worry about half filling the tank or not (maybe a lit bit less pressure in the tyres will make it easier to pedal)
Save not only on petrol costs but also Insurance, Road Tax, MOT and servicing not to mention depreciation.
These are just a few of the top of my head but no doubt there are contless more advantages

Hmm that might work for you but when one works sixteen miles from home and public transport would require:

    1) A 6 minute walk
    2) a wait for a bus , followed by a bus journey of some 10 mins
    3) a wait for another bus - followed by another bus journey os some 25 mins
    4) a walk of approx 15/20 mins
    5) wait for a train - followed by a train journey of approx 25 mins
    6) a walk of 15 mins

It kind of looses it's appeal a tad - especially in January !!

I get a little sick and tired of sanctimonious types preching we should give up our cars and take public transport - especially when one of the main sanctimonious types is a thick, knuckle dragging , neanderthall politician who owns two jags

Besides I spent the 1st 20 years of my adult life having never owned a car and just the last 5 owning one - so I feel I'm entitled to burn some fossil fuels, besides I quite like the democratic concept of personal freedom.

    Ehmmm end of rant.

Not very realistic if you are running a delivery business! This is what really p*sses me off about the Congestion Charge. We can hardly take all the boxes on the tube can we?
"Excuse me, this expires today, will you be reducing it?"
  • I think keeping the car windows closed affects, the drag and thus the cars performance and efficiency more than many of the economy measures suggested as for air conditioning. Well!
  • i find if you put double the amount of fuel that you normally put in (in my case 12 litres + 12 litres= 24) you end up using more i think weight does have something to do with it. I think the lighter the fuel load the better. even if i put 15 to 18 litres in i still end up using more 12 is a good all round number i think.

lose the spare wheel and buy some tyre weld

put a bottle of redex fuel cleaner in your petrol tank ever 3000-4000 miles

make sure you have a clean air filter and buy some air cleaner spray to clean out the jets or carb & replace the air filter if needed

check and replace if need spark plugs and HT leads

do a oil change every 7000-8000 miles

check your tyres are pumped -up every week

have a clean car on the outside as well as in aeros work better by doing this

to do all this cost a little bit of money but you will save more in the long run WELL A LOT MORE i am getting loads of miles out of my car.

Regarding the original post, fuel consumption will be affected by weight. Mainly during acceleration, but also during cruising to a lesser extent (rolling resistance has a term proportional to vehicle weight).

Weight is the enemy of an efficient vehicle. Hence why a motorbike can have good performance and fuel economy.
Plenty of good advice above; I would add that under load eg going uphill or accelerating it is most efficient for the engine to be at the speed where the best torque occurs; this is another thing in favour of diesel (typically 2000 rpm - right in the middle of normal driving speeds).
Not necessarily. Peak efficiency will occur somewhere in mid-low rpm. At low rpm gas exchange processes are inefficient and at high rpm frictional losses are high.

Slow acceleration is not efficient either. It's better to accelerate reasonably smartly, and it's also more considerate for those behind. Of course, minimising speed changes helps since breaking is throwing energy away.
    Happy chappy

firstly if you can find a parkin space in liverpool with all the work thats going on well, well done.

secondly we dont rob hub caps anymore!!!!!!

WE PREFER THE ALLOYS - THEY ARE WORTH MORE:D :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
 If i didnt have any bad luck id have no luck at all!!

  • Just as a matter of interest here are the results from the onboard computer of my 1998 2.5 V6 Omega. Same trip from NW Essex to Frodsham near Liverpool on 3 occasions on Tuesday mornings. Journey of 209 miles almost all on motorways or dual carriageways. Maximum cruising speeds of 80mph, 70mph and 60mph.

Speed mpg Road Time Fuel Cost

    80 28 3h 47min 33.9 lit £32.20
    70 32 4h 58min 29.7 lit £28.20
    60 36 4h 11min 26.4 lit £24.80

Thus travelling at a maximum of 80mph compared with 60mpph I used 29% more fuel at a cost of £7.40 to save 24 minutes! Cost of 31p/min saved!

If we are serious about pollution and global warming and money saving then should we not be driving less quickly?

We may even have fewer accidents and less serious accidents and save some lives as well.
  • I use magnets on my Fuel injection pump and my injector pipes, went from Bolton to Liverpool last week early doors averaged 84mpg at 55 mph in a Skoda fabia 1.9 SDi

    MPG and other saving tips
    1. Fill your tank only in the morning, keep it topped up it reduces condensation in the tank especially diesel and you get more fuel as it as not had time to expand in the stations tanks.
    2. Check fuel filter regularly, drain off water
    3. A diesel engine requires 12,000 gallons of air for every gallon of fuel so wash air filter twice a year in warm water with soap powder, dry naturally or on a radiator before refitting. an air filter can be cleaned up to 9 times so saves the cost of expensive filters every year.
    4. Use Straight Veg oil with 3% white spirit in diesels.
    5. Keep tyres 1.5 lbs psi over the reccomended pressure you will save up to 3 mpg with this tip.
    6. Remove all unwanted stuff from the car it cost money to drive with it in.
    7. Check and clean spark plugs regularly
    8. Do not drive with the windows open it causes too much drag
    10. Get into top gear as soon as possible but do not let the engine labour
    11. No need to use all gears unless car is full, try going from 1st to 3rd and 3rd to 5th, or for 4 gear cars from 1st to 2nd to 4th.
    12. Use your brakes to slow you down and not your gears, brakes are a lot cheaper than gearboxes.
    13. Do not ride your clutch,, 10 seconds riding your clutch on that hill could take 10 months wear from your clutch plates. it is a chargeable offence in the military to ride your clutch.
    14. Use an oil additive like Molybdenum Disulphide (MoS2) is used as a lubricant and an agent. It forms strong films on metallic surfaces, and is highly resistant to both extreme temperatures and high pressure. it can save your engine from seizing up and can give you an extra 5-10% fuel saving and reduces the amount of services required, saving more than £120 per year.
    15. Use rare Earth magnets (5,000 Gauss strength) close to the Carburrettor or close to engine as poss if petrol injection, site magnets close to Fuel injection pump and each individual injector pipe. magnets line up the Molecules a more complete burn is achieved with vastly reduced emmissions. PM me if you want to know where to purchase. use on boilers and gas fires water pipes in hard water areas and beer pipes reduces down time for cellar man.
    16. remove roof racks and luggage racks when not required they create a lot of drag.
    17. Shop around for car insurance mine is £127 and £143 Fully comp for 2 cars, skoda 2002 and Berlingo 2000 SAGA, House insurance (4 bed detached) £120.86 Direct line, excess £200 no frills insurance.
    18. Asda credit card gets you 2p per litre of the fuel.
    19. Get Tyres checked regularly tyres that need tracking or balancing cause wear and increase your fuel consumption.
    20. Use a transmission additive also reduces wear and friction and reduces fuel consumption.
    21. Do not drive with lead boots on i.e. do not put your foot down through the gears, gracefully pull away changing gear as soon as possible without revving the engine.
    22. Watch the traffic in front, gauge the lights or roundabout, if you are in a queue switch off until you can move.

Thats why my Skoda averages around 70-75 mpg every fill up. with empty car, about 60mpg when the wife uses it.
