    Hi guys!!

Ok well i can place the old tower next to the new one if this is going to be the easiest way to do it?

Something is wrong with the old one but i dont care tbh lmao i just want all my photo's/music...

When you say plug it in and act as the "slave" wil there be a spare slot to just plug the hardrive into? I will be home from 9pm 2night so i can get makes and models of pc's if thats the best way to sort this?

Thanks for all the info btw :-)

Oh they're one and the same thing.

Basically you need to disconnect it completly from the old PC and plug into it a power cable from your new/good PC and run the ribbon cable into an unused IDE socket in your new PCs motherboard. (do this while both are switched off, take anti static precautions -basically touch the bare metal of the case + something earthed alot and don't wear a thick wooly/nylon jumper)

-you could run into a problem the new PC only has one IDE socket and its in use for the primary hard drive, that would put you into needing to buy something territory.

connect it up and boot up your new PC.

The above link explains how to put it into slave mode if you find you need to (remove the indicated jumper switch, could be slightly awkward if its still inside the old case)

if you run into trouble it might need minor fiddling in BIOS or windows to get the drive recognised

Press F-whatever during boot up to access BIOS

Control panel > administrative toools > disk management in windows

(go in and look but ask if you're not sure whaat might need changing)

If you post the make/model of your new PC someone can probably look up if it has a spare IDE socket to plug the the ribbon cable into)

....don't go bending any pins :)

copy them to your new machine's hard drive (eg desktop) and try again to open them from there.

Long term you might want to:

-Install your old hard drive in your new PC for extra storage space.

-Copy everything off the old hard drive (check it all works ok), reformat it, then copy stuff back you want to keep and use it as a backup drive

-Copy everything off your old drive and dispose of it if its small / not worth the hassle

-locate the 'thanks' button on above forum posts you might have found useful and press it occasionally :p

This sounds like a NTFS security issue

Assuming the photos are in c:\documents and settings\your username\etc etc etc

You want to navigate to c:\documents and settings, right click > properties. Go to security tab. If it is not there turn off simple file sharing by going here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874 and following instructions.

When in security tab, click add put in your username for the machine you are on, press checknames - this should underline in the box. Press OK. Highlight your username in the list and make sure full control is ticked. Click advanced, tick replace permission entries on all child objects with entries show here. Click OK. If that doesn't work go to owner tab in advanced and change the owner to your current username.
If my post helped you in anyway, please hit the "Thanks" button! Please note any advice I give is followed at your own risk!
