Suspicion of Gas Leak is most common way used for Landlord to gain posession of property and then have the gas shut off with notice indicating that it has been done so.
DH look at a house once where property on other side of the street was boarded up but some work had restarted on it, it had been a tenancy.
Tenants were ASBO collectors, druggies and what ever else they could do that hammered their neigbourhood into submission until they p***** of one quiet old elderly couple in smearing car with dog sh*t and threatening them. Was told the couple never threatened them just called up extended family who arrived next evening in a couple of vans and proceeded to evict smashing every thing as it was chucked onto the lawn and then breaking every window car and any other posessions they could find. Tenants called cops demanding help but they who arrived in droves to watch it and refused to get involved.
Evicted mob left area and never tried to come back as were well aware of consequences apparently.
House left for 3 months but evicters came back and were replacing windows and doors for LL when I was up the street.0 -

Have heard it done quite a few times as 1 1/2 months rent lost is way better than 6 months plus court costs.0 -

I think you've been reading too many Rachman-era penny-dreadfuls or something. If you're a landlord and you think acting in that way is acceptable I'd cheerfully wave you off to court in the blinking of an eye and have my fingers crossed that you get a custodial sentence.
Not really an on topic post but here goes.
Poor old Rachman is much maligned. To the best of my knowledge, all of Rachman's evictions were done through the courts (certainly at least the vast majority were). He was not violent and, again, in at least the vast majority of cases (if not all) he did everything by the book.
The "Rachman" scandal was about the enforcement of repairing covenants and the evading of statutory rent controls, not violence or illegal eviction.
To be honest, in my opinion, Rachman was partially a victim. Many other "establishment" LL's of time used exactly the same practices but Rachman, who as a stateless Jewish immigrant, was never part of the "establishment", however much he tried and so was a very convenient scapegoat. The fact that he was Christine Keeler's lover and landlord and his death shortly before the Profumo affair broke simply made the scape goating ooh so simple and allowed many other "establishment" LL's to escape scrutiny.0
