Help with Acer Travelmate 4150LMi

Hi there,
This is my first post so please be kind...
My Acer Travelmate is approximately 13 months old and has developed a problem which 'seems' to be related to the CPU speed. If I run it whilst it is plugged into the mains, the computer turns itself off before even getting to the Windows welcome screen. If I run it from the battery, then it's fine. I have figured out that the problem stems from the CPU speed as when I went into the Acer Power Management program, I noticed on battery power that the CPU speed is set at low whilst on AC power, it is set on the highest. When I attempted to change the CPU speed for the battery mode, and pressed 'apply', after a few seconds, the computer turned itself off. I have managed to get back into the power management system and change the speed back to low for battery and things are back to normal. I can charge the laptop OK whilst it is switched off, but obviously, I would like the option of being able to actually run the computer from the mains, rather than have my time limited by the battery life.
Does anyone have any bright ideas of what the problem actually is and whether it is viable to fix it?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post, those that stayed with me.
