Car Insurance groups how can I find an indication of difference between bands?

I have a nearly new Mercedes Vito Dualiner with full protected NCB. My wife (insured with SAGA ... full protected NCB, fully comp at about £290) has a 2 litre (ancient) Mondeo that she wants to change.

In 7 months our daughter will be 17 and will learn to drive. She will not be able to drive my Vito but we will want her to use my wife's car. I appreciate the market will vary in the time but cannot find any indication about COMPARATIVE between bands which will influence what car we buy now. (I also appreciate that SAGA will not be an option when we renew this time.

I have visited Motorpoint and would love to have a 12 month old Mondeo Titanium sport for my wife but know this would be a lot more expensive to insure (when we come to bring our daughter on as a named driver).

So, has anyone any sites, knowledge or indications of jumps in prices between groups.

What I'm hoping for is a list!

Group 1 .... Circumstances ..... Price
Group2 ..... Circumstances ..... Price + £30 per annum
Group 3 .... Circumstances .... Price + £90 per annum
Group 4 ... Circumstances .... Price + £150 per annum
Group 5

etc

Group "x" ... Circumstances.... Price + £ 5000 per annum

Can anyone help?!!

You need to have a look through all of the threads on insurance for 17 year olds and this will give you an idea of car groups and cost. Do bear in mind though that if your daughter is going to use your wife's car while she is learning, some insurers will exclude her once she passes her test as she then becomes high risk - just passed, inexperienced, driving on own therefore statistically much more likely to have an accident (a bit less likely than a 17 year old lad though).

You may wish to consider using a company like Collingwood where you buy monthly insurance for your daughter whilst learning and if she has a bump this does not affect your own bonus. Cover ceases immediately she passes her test.

Some insurers will also automatically base the terms on your daughter's age as they are very wise to parents trying to insure a vehicle for the youngster.

Personally you might want to bite the bullet, buy a little runabout like a vauxhall corsa 1 litre (low group) and put the insurance in your daughter's name. Try adding your wife and yourself as drivers, and try for comp with a big excess as this often comes out cheaper than third party. Bear in mind though that it is not just the group of the vehicle that influences the cost of the cover - postcodes differ in price hugely. Usual cost for low risk are with policy in child's name, low group car is c£2k+. You could also look at a family fleet policy as this may help keep the cost down.

Many many threads on here on the topic - many insurers will now not insure 17 year olds and rather than going for a website quote you are better to speak to a good broker that knows their market.

On the vehicle groups all insurers differ so as far as I know there is no site that will give what you want - I think that you can get an indication of group from Parkers, but this will be broad guesswork as the market varies so hugely.
  • Hi Alun

there are no hard and fast rules on vehicle groups and how they effect insurance. Also be carefull when assessing insurance groups as insurers rate cars very differently so what might be a group 2 for 1 insurer may be a lot higher for another. As a general rule of thumb the lower the engine size and the older the vehicle the cheaper the insurance is going to be and steer clear of anything that is even remotley a performance car.

If your really looking for a comparative now then obtain some quotes for various vehicles with and without your daughter on just alter her DoB to assume she is now 17. Just be carefull if you do this on a com!!!!on site as can be a lot of assumptions made giving a false picture, I would agree with bouncy a good local broker can help with some advice and quotations.
