Security alternatives

Options
Hi

What is a good internet security alternative to Norton?

I want hopefully an equally good setup, but for free

Can anybody help?

Microsoft Security Essentials. Consistently scores high in AV tests.

I'm not sure about "equally good", but I believe you'll far exceed the protection offered by Norton using the following free tools:

Avira AntiVir (antivirus - make sure other antivirus software is uninstalled)
Comodo Free Firewall (if you need a software firewall - again disable other firewalls)
    Spybot - Search & Destroy
    SpywareBlaster
    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    Secunia PSI
Firefox (web browser - more secure than Internet Explorer)

    Hope this helps...

yup, I agree you'll struggle to find something equally as weak as Norton....

However I'd suggest picking one of the following (all free and very good/better than alot of other paid for 'big names') so as not to get cluttered with too much 'protection' that's not really necessary/critical

    Avira
    Avast
    Microsoft Security Essentials

(be sure to turn the windows firewal on, you really don't need a 3rd party one -the other programs on the list mostly protect you from cluttering your PC installing by junk yourself rather than provide real time virus/malware protection)

Do use an up to date browser

Do have windows set to automatically download and update security patches

If you have a current account with Barclays you can get Kaspersky Internet Security for free. I'm on my second year licence.

the general programs you should look into in my mind are

Anti virus one of the following -
    Avira
    Avast
    Microsoft Security Essentials

Firewall one of the following -
    Windows firewall
    Comodo
    Zone Alarm

and then Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for a on demand malware scanner

the above should give you much better security than Norton and make you system faster as they will take a lot less system resources
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
