I'm looking into dragging myself into the technical age!
I am rubbish with everything technical and if something can go wrong, it usually does.
I need help in buying the right things for an idiot!
a) sat nav. I have been reading up on the internet and seen that tomtom and garmin are good choices but lots of people say about buying different brands and putting tomtom onto them. This would be far too technical for me (please dont say its easy cause for someone like me its NOT).
There are so many choices I don't know which one to buy so need help.
b) digital camera. I bought a digital camera and have found that it doesn't take pictures at night (got someone to check for me) and it doesn't have a lead to recharge – even though I thought putting new batteries in would do that. Anyway, it was another waste of money of many of the things I have bought and wished I hadn't bothered. I'd like a camera that takes photos day and night, has a lead in the box so I can plug it in and recharge, and takes both pics and film. Yet this is proving difficult to find.
I know this is very simplistic for a lot of you but for me, all this technology is difficult. I'm only just mastering mobile phones!!!
Where do I start? Can anyone point me in the right direction for these things please?

- I tried to download an album onto my computer and got that wrong. apparently i ended up doing everything wrong (the man in the shop gave up trying to explain). I want to get something that I can download albums onto easily. I don't know if I need an mp3, mp4, isomething or what. I don't want to use anything with earphones so does that rule most things out? Should I stick to buying the whole albums and keep using my cd player?
- I dread my video player packing up and know I have to get something better but where do I start with this? With so many different things around, what do I get?

a) You can't buy a different brand of satnav and install Tomtom onto it. You can buy a GPS equipped smartphone (such as an iPhone) and install Tomtom on that, providing Tomtom support it.
b) It will. You need to change the picture mode to night. It might be indicated by an icon that looks like a crescent moon with a star next to it. If you tell us what it is, we can tell you. Not all cameras recharge batteries. In fact, its only really in the last year or so that many have moved to doing so.
To be honest, your best bet would be to do the following:
1) Buy "Windows X for dummies" (replace the X with XP, Vista or 7 depending on what version of Windows you're running)
2) Enquire at your local adult education establishments about doing a basic computer course.
Both the above will save you a load of time and grief.0 -

I think the OP may have been reading about the cheapo Ebuyer satnavs, where you can replace the shipped satnav application (Turbodog - what a great name for a satnav app) and install TomTom s/w, though we couldn't possibly describe that here or the mods would be on us.
If you just want a basic unit, the entry-level models from Garmin or TomTom will do you just fine. My personal preference is Garmin - the user interface is slightly easier to learn, though the spoken instructions are very slightly inferior to TomTom. The quality of Garmin's customer service is what swings it for me in their favour.0 -
The more you know about something the less you pay:-) That said however sometimes its worth paying to make life easy for yourself.
There is so many products on the market and the one that is correct for you will depend on what you want from it?
So Can I ask a few questions to understand you a bit better?
For the SATNAV what would you use for? That is do you plan to use everyday for hours at a time or is it once a week for 30 minutes?
How much do you spend per month on your mobile phone ?
Are you a buding 'David Bailey' or point and click?
For the music playing device does it have to be portable or is it to attach to something in the home?
Do you have a fixed budget?
With anything new you are going to make mistakes. Don't be scared to make mistakes its how you learn?0 -
Video player-if you are looking to record TV programmes, if so you need to say what sort of TV reception you are getting at present.
Are you still on analogue, or can you get Freeview?
(I'm assuming that your area hasn't switched yet, if so your VCR would be of little use already). No free lunch, and no free laptop0
