Scrap Car

Hi,

My 9 year old Fiat Punto was involved in an accident and as the repairs would cost as much as the car I am looking at selling it as scrap/for repairs. A company found on the internet have offered me £150, how do I go about notifying the DVLA, do I just fill in the V5 registration document, if so which section? Thanks.

The V5 tells you which Sections want filling in.

Remember to ask for a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) from whomever disposes of it. Since last Sunday the DVLA require you to send it off with the V5. You cannot be charged for the CoD.

    See here for details.

Be VERY careful with some companies offering you money for scrap cars online.... A lot of them offer you one price, then either haggle when they turn up, OR charge you a £59.99 admin fee or whatever......

Best bet, phone a local scrapyard, drive it over, drive it on the weighbridge yourself. It's very simple, they'll explain everything.

Take the cash, get the log-book signed, walk away.

    Regards,

if it has a cat on it, take it off - then sell them that separately as they pay you the same if its on or off, and the cat is usually worth about 30 quid because of the platifnum it contains; obviously this only applies if you're selling to a local scrap yard
