I have a greed to get him one.
But I am confused the ipad looks great but I am not sure what it is

Is it a suitable replacement for a laptop ? or is it restrictive in any way ?

I really know nothing about technology but don't want to get the wrong thing.

Thanks :j

I wouldn't recommend getting an iPad.... it's basically a very small laptop but with things like iPhone applications. It's for very basic usage, playing basic games, reading the news, writing emails, mainly for people "on the move" I would say.

I love them, but would never pay the price they want.

Could be the understatement of this century.:rotfl:
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

i think the best way to discribe a ipad is a media consumption device. if someone wants something to create anything it would be better to get a laptop which not only has more functionality but also can cost a lot less
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • why does he want to run two pcs in this manner? Sounds like an expensive solution?

I have just bought an iPad and love it, but it's not a laptop replacement in anyway.

It's a mobile multimedia device, it does a lot of things but not one great.

If you want a laptop buy a laptop, if you a portable laptop buy a netbook, but don't buy an iPod expecting it to be a replacement for anything.

Things like iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch all need a PC or Laptop to update and transfer data on/off it.
  • Any reason he's closing the PC off from the internet? You know he could just use a firewall (or unplug it) when he doesn't want net access

Maybe he's afraid of his pirated software phoning home...

Maybe.. but if one wanted to stop software accessing the net, you just use a firewall that alerts you when they're trying to do so (e.g. ZoneAlarm)

I guess a 'non-internet connected PC' would be good for homework, where you'd be able to get on with stuff, and not get distracted browsing the net

The answer is no - it's a large iPhone.
It hasn't got office applications (though you could possibly access online or "cloud" apps).
It's fine for surfing the web (inc. online mail systems like hotmail).
But it is not a laptop (or even netbook) computer.
    Which is a shame.
