Lost engagement ring - how to claim

OMG - I think i've lost my engagement ring and I don't know what to do. I took it off whilst I was clearing out our back garden as I didn't want it to get dirty and was worried it would fall off (ironic, I know) so i took it off and put it in the kitchen. I only noticed after many visits to the tip that it wasn't where I'd left it. At first, I thought my hubby had moved it as a point making exercise but he hasn't and next I though my dogs might have played with it or managed to push it off where I'd left it. Long story short - looked everywhere and just can't find it. I'm absolutely gutted and soooo annoyed with myself. Can I claim on my house insurance? What will I need to do? I'm worried they'll think its a dodgy claim (its not, but i've never claimed for anything so expensive before). Also - if I put a claim in, what happens if it turns up (still hoping it will).
