Inspiration for UK/cheap honeymoon!

Hi guys

Thought I'd give your imaginations a little prod! We are getting married next summer and are in the midst of all the planning. We originally had the idea of going to Australia for our honeymoon with a couple of stopovers on the way, probably buying a Quantas World Trip tickets costing around £2k for both of us with the stops we would want. However, we would still have hotels and spending money on top of this to pay, probably taking the bill closer to £6k - eek! We are also looking to move house out of the city and start a family next year so money will be tight!!!

So where would you go on honeymoon in the UK or cheap Europe (if it costs the same or less!)? Say for 2 weeks so maybe 2 locations, and we don't like beach holidays so need somewhere with places to go and see etc. Lets cap the cost for travel and accommodation at £2k.

Any ideas? Anyone actually done this? Oh and we are in Scotland so perhaps anything south would be better - seen enough Highland cows thank you! :rotfl:

Exciting challenge you have set there. What kind of things do you and your fiance enjoy doing/ seeing?

Ok here we go (list sorry!):

We are wanting to move to the coast so would be lovely to have at least one week near the water (pretty please :) )
Also love the countryside - peace and quiet is a must since we currently live in the city beside a main road (grr...)
LIke historic things like Castles and Abbeys, Museums etc etc
Love fine food and cocktails - hate clubbing & places like that
I like shopping (spot the female!) - not essential but would entertain me for an afternoon!!!

I think the main thing we want is to relax in peace and quiet but if possible, for one week, be able to walk to somewhere for a drink and/or food. We would be going at the end of July/start of August.
  • How about Belgium, loads of castles, abbeys, churches and culture there. Not that expensive either 'cause you can get almost anywhere by train. Bruge, Gent, Brussels, Antwerp etc all really nice cities.

Maybe go through the Netherlands too

    Come and explore Scotland.

I'm not kidding - if you pick somewhere in Fife it's less than an hour on the train to Edinburgh, has lots of castles and golf courses etc. in driving distance, has blue flag beaches, but is pretty cheap to stay in because it's off the beaten toursist track.

Across the bridge is Dundee, lots of shopping and another beach, but not as busy as Edinburgh.

Travel up the coast a bit to Lunan Bay - stunning views of the North Sea - be brave and take a dip:eek: if you dare.

you would manage this for £2K including spending money and food budget /travel etc.

    Scotland is good.

What about a Norway or a Baltic cruise.

Base price will come in at under £1kpp

Scotland would be a very easy option for us as would involve very little travel. However, between us we've pretty much seen everything/been everywhere throughout our lives either as kids or on wee trips together being natives!

The Baltic cruise and Belgium are really good ideas though - thank you :)

    Any more ideas?!

How about Barcelona? Flights are plentiful & cheap if you keep an eye on the deals. You have the coast, the city, great food & the history. If you hired a car you could go inland into the hills, Monserrat etc or up to Girona, which is a lovely little city. Further north towards France is Dali country - Figueres, Roses & Cadaques on the coast, which is a beautiful little seaside town. It's very "Spanish" - not many Brits if you avoid the traditional Lloret de Mar area.

Reading the title I thought I could help.
Our honeymoon was a 4 night break at Craig Tara (Haven) in Ayr. Did a cheap hotel deal on the way and again on the way back.

But £2k, to us, would be the holiday of a lifetime, so you can probably push the boat out more than we could.
Have you been to Rome? It's very romantic and an amazing place in terms of historic buildings - it seems like there's something around every corner.

Sorry, I missed the bit about you being in Scotland.:o

    Cruise out of Rosyth?:D

Easyjet from Edinburgh to somewhere a bit warmer than here? (they go direct to Malaga, might be a bit too hot for you in the summer)

They fly to Paris too, very romantic, tons of stuff to do, even better if you can find a decent priced hotel in the right area.

Luxembourg is a great little place too - fly cheap airline to Brussels Chareloi and drive the 60 miles or so to Luxembourg. Lots of wine, nice scenery, Luxembourg City has lots to see and do too.

  • You do not say when in the summer but if the summer is anything like this year in July and August you probably want to get as far away from the UK as possbile!

Once or twice we have combined a city break with a beach holiday. We flew to Barcelona and then got a car and went up the coast to a lively place called Cadques where Dali lived. From Barcelona you can also travel south to Sitges. the train service is very good.

We also flew to Lisbon and then had a few days on the "Lisbon Riveria" around Estoril. Rome works as well as you can get to the coast easily but that may b a bit costly

This year we went to Lithuania and had a few days in the capital Villnius and then got the train to the beautiful Baltic Coast. For 11 nights food, flights, travel, spending money etc total cost £900 for 2 people. We went on loads of trips and ate out every night. I tried to persuade OH that becaus the beer was half the price did not mean he had to drink twice as much!
