I haven't checked it, i will check tomorrow when i go back down to check the reading again.

But the meters are clearly labelled, they have fronts to them that you have to lift up to read the meter, and all of the fronts have the flat numbers labelled on them.
Just because it has your flat number on it does not mean that the meter is connected to your flat. That is why you have to turn everything off and check that the meter has stopped moving.

The ideal thing is to have someone else in the flat speaking to you on the phone whilst you watch the meter. They turn a fairly high load appliance on, a kettle is good as modern ones are up to 3kW. The meter will go very fast, turn it off it will stop and back on again it will go fast again. That way you can be certain the meter is yours.
  • Okay so i read my meter, EDF claimed my meter reading is 29170.1, they swore blind this was correct and that they has sent someone to read the meter only a week or so ago.

My actual meter reading is 27250.
That is a discrepancy of 1920
And the meters don't even go into points, i checked all of the other meters.

I called them and was told that i must have read it wrong and that i was probably reading someone else's meter.
I also found out after reading through a lot of old bills that they have switched me from the cheap band that i was on to the standard prices.
    Can they do that?

You need to write and tell them that.
(Not phone - too easy to deny.)
  • I though this sounded ridiculous so I asked them to send out a person to check the metre, they claim they did and it was fine, but i don't believe them.

When you say they sent someone out to check the meter, was this a standard meter reading, or did the agent carry out a meter accuracy test?

Like others have said, it may be the case that your meter has been mis-labelled, ie EDF have the right meter, but the labels are wrong so you're reading the wrong meter. Check the meter serial number on your bill against the serial number on your actual meter (it should be next to the bar code on the front of the case) if there is a difference call EDF and inform them of this.

It is also possible that MPAS records have the wrong meter attached to your property entirely. In this case you will need to do what others have advised below and turn off all of your appliances at the consumer unit to check if the meter stops moving. Whichever meter in the communal area stops moving will be your meter. You should note the serial number and call EDF.
  • I did check the meter number (to help me determine that it was not mislabelled).
I also turned everything on and off to make sure it was my meter, but that makes no difference because there is no spinning disk or flashing light on any of the meters, they just have the digital panel with the reading.

EDF claim that they send people to read their meters once every couple of months, which i don't believe.
They also claim to have sent someone out to check the meter, after i demanded they send someone to check that it was not faulty. which again i don't believe they did.

I took pictures of my meter (for the reading) and posted them to EDF to prove the meter reading i took was accurate, but i have yet to receive a reply from them.

Ask them to come again and arrange an appointment to read the meter to ensure you are there.
