Lawn advice

I spent a few hours at the weekend with a knife, crouched over our lawn, digging all the dandelions out. I got many out in their entirety (I couldn't believe how long some of the roots were) but for some I know there's bits of root left behind (bum).
Anyway now my lawn has lots of patches so my next step was to get some grass seed to try and fill them in, I figured it would be as good a time as any to do it since we're getting plenty of rain. But since some of the patches still have some roots in, I thought I should tackle this first. Is there any weedkiller I can use to kill the bits of roots left behind? I am learning with growing vegetables but still have no clue about the other things that are in my garden!
Just thought I should add - we have cats who play on the lawn, so while I realise any weedkillers are pretty nasty, I would like to avoid any that are particularly toxic to pets. (obviously i would prefer a lawn full of dandelions to sick kitties!)

As daft as it seems you could do with letting the weeds grow back a bit to show some leaf, so that when you do give them a dose of weedkiller the leaves will soak it in like they do with rainwater and go straight to the roots! And at least letting them grow back you can see where they are. As for weedkiller, avoid anything that contains Glyphosate as this'll kill your grass! I've been using Verdone extra (the liquid bottle that you mix with water in your sprayer or watering can) to good effect. Or any harder weeds like brambles, then SBK works wonder's too
Good luck! 0 -
Thanks both. The salt thing sounds like its worth a try! ITRUK yes thats a good idea; I know for some of them I did get all the roots out - SO satisfying - so if I wait and see which ones grow back then at least I won't have any extra nasties hanging about.
It'll give me a chance to do a bit more investigating re the cats - they do love romping about on the lawn and spend so much time licking their paws, I'm quite worried about this aspect.0 -

Oh sorry forgot to mention about the cat's! Just looked at Verdone extra and it say's that kids and pets need not to be excluded once it's dried (which is pretty much after 10mins by the way plants and grass suck it up!)0
